2016 LR4 Motor Failure - Cam Chain
Long story short, my cam chain appears to be stretched, gear tooth broken or tensioner has failed.
The check engine light came on, flashed actually, and it was running rough. A quick scan showed misfire on 4,5 & 6. I haven't had any issues up to this point and no indication anything was wrong. The day before we had been up in the mountains with no issues, strange noises, etc. I attempted to swap coil packs to see if the problem followed but the extremely limited space and the fact that it was so cold outside (Denver) had me stop and get an appt with my independent shop. In the meantime I moved it to the street, started up, no check engine (seemed to have cleared), not running rough and parked it until the appt. Appt day came an car would not start, turned over but wouldn't fire. Got it towed and shop took a look and this where the cam chain was found to be excessively loose, saw with my own eyes, like extremely loose. The mechanic thinks the engine is done as I have likely bent valves, etc. They don't want to turn it over, even by hand.
So re-man'd engine is 10K, another 4k for labor to pull existing and put this in. Maybe another $2k for stuff that pops up, odds and ends, etc. I am crazy to consider doing this? Is there a chance the motor is fine (the chain is unbelievably loose)? Shop said the labor to pull it all apart just to verify/check see is going to be upwards of 5k Car has 94k on it.
