Coolant smell
Update, I noticed that the coolant level was low again so I added some more coolant. Today I pressure tested the system and the pressure held. I pressurized the system to 14/15 psi range and it held without leaking. I’m a little confused. I have noticed that where I cleaned in the engine bay where the coolant had been had another puddle the other day. I was expecting to find the leak when I pressure tested but no dice. Is it possible that the cap on the over flow reservoir is leaking at high pressures? I figure that’s the only thing that had changed when I pressure tested the cap had been changed for the pressure tester cap. The puddle of coolant I keep seeing is around the center of the car. I was certain it would be the water pump, now I’m at a loss. Any ideas or other Theory’s of what’s going on?
Your cap cant leak, it has air behind it. And if it leaked air you would having boiling coolant which would result in overheating. Odds are your leak is happening at a higher pressure or higher temp, when things expand. Also coolant can have a small level of self-sealing ability by forming a crust that may help seal things temporarily, especially during a cool down when pressure drops. If you are seeing leaking coolant, you simply have a leak that needs to be addressed.
Sometimes I take the "may as well do it based on age" approach. If you think he water pump has not been changed, get one and just do it. If you happen to find a different source for the leak while in there then you know - but still do the pump and then order whatever other part you may need. From what you describe, its likely the pump.
