Default Emergency Brake Stuck Saga

Hello everyone,

I’ve owned my 2013 LR4 about five months now. It’s been a solid car during that time.

Today I get in it, start it up, and push the emergency brake release button. I heard this horrendous motor/grind sound for several seconds which I now know to be the electric E-brake motor. The dash lit up with an E-brake fault.

I turn off the car and repeat the process several more times and could not get the e-brake to release.

Next, I removed the center console cup holder and tugged on the manual release cable. I heard the pop and the e-brake released as expected. However, the dash e-brake fault remained illuminated in the dash.

So I decide, no problem, I’ll avoid using the e-brake for a while. In order to clear the dash light, I disconnected the battery. However, when I reconnected the battery, the e-brake fault was still showing in the dash.

Does anyone have any recommendation on how to clear the dash light now that the e-brake is released?

side note: electric e-brake… what an unnecessary feature by the way!

Thank you.

once you pull the release, the fault can only be cleared with a scan tool; even then I think it will come back at some point when the ECU tries "to release" the EPB either when you select reverse or drive.
Yes, the EPB is horribly over engineered item that was totally unnecessary. nothing wrong with a handle or foot pedal

Thank you for the reply.

when you say scan tool, do you mean an obdii scanner or some other Land Rover specific scanner?

Thanks

Will give my basic OBDII scanner a try and see if I can clear it. Thanks

I took the car in for an oil change and my independent mechanic confirmed the parking brake actuator is bad and needs replacement.

Their quote is $2,100 with OEM parts.

I’ll need to research and see what options exist. If anyone has any recommendations, that would be appreciated. Thanks

last time i purchased one, the oe actuator was about 1100 from atl brit. Due to lack of time and not having a lift, i paid an indie about 1600 labor to replace it so 2100 is decent deal. The location of the actuator on the LR4 is horrible. You can sometimes rebuild the actuators but it is such a PITA to r&r, i would go with new and use oe as well
