Default Is the Full Size Spare necessary?

Hello y’all, I am about to take my LR4 on a road trip out to Colorado and Moab. While I’m there I’ll be driving up some moderate trails with some light rock crawling. I have 255/60R19 Falken AT Trail tires with good tread… I’m wondering though, should I be replacing my spare tire with a full size? If so, what options do I have? I’m looking at buying used wheels and throwing the cheapest 255/60 on it I can. What I’m wondering is, would a regular LR wheel fit in the Factory mounting location? It appears the lack of the center hole would make it impossible.

Yes, with a stock tire size and a factory wheel, you will have no trouble fitting a full size spare as it was a factory option with certain packages. The center cap is removable. I would test it out beforehand and see if you need a new spare wheel winch. They are known to fail if original and very easy to replace.

yep as he said. The HSE with rear locker was sold with full size wheel/tire in the same location as the emergency/temporary.

I’ve said it before, I think the location of the spare, especially when off road, and the rinky dink cable system is for the birds.
That is, if you have to go into the cargo area anyways to manage the cable, why not just put the spare in there. And not have to get muddy reaching under the vehicle to collect it. Yes it was a stupid decision.
But to your point; yes, a full size spare is the smart call.

I prefer the same tire on the spare. Then adopt a 5 tire rotation schedule. (old school thinking)

Thats a good point. I just bought a set of RRS wheels with 255/55/20s and street tires. Im gonna use one of them as a spare for my trip, I would invest in a matching tire but mine are already at 50%.

The ridiculous theme of spare tires being undersized, reduced speed, and limited distance, can only be explained by saving space or making it easier to put on.
Of course, you have to take the full sized tire off anyways…
And the price of these stupid things can be more than the full sized tire.
No, I don’t get it.
