Gas Mileage
we have seen mostly 14 to 22 mpg. SC engines alot lower but depends on the driver and conditions. Don't expect 14 in NYC. But do expect 24 on the highway. The lr4 has a feature that enables you to see instant mpg while driving.
I have had my LR4 since January. We consistently see 14 - 15 MPG combined. Just took a trip from California to Oregon for Thanksgiving and was averaging about 18 on the highway. Bear in mind, we had a few mountain passes AND i averaged over 71 MPH for the entire trip. I am sure if I had knocked the speed down, the MPG would have gone up.
This car is a dream for road trips. My son watched movies in the back and both my wife and I were very comfortable. Very little fatigue after 10+ hours in the SUV.

Thank you for that info. I was concerned that we would average lower. I love the vehicle but didn't want to pay for premium and a significant mileage reduction. I have a Volvo XC90 and although they are behind in technology, the vehicle has been a great family car averaging 18.7 combined.
Flip,
Did you just buy your Volvo? your message would indicate you have had it for awhile. I just did some quick calculations, and the difference between 18 mpg and 15 mpg over the course of the year equates to 133 gallons (assuming 12,000 miles per year). At $3.40 per gallon, you are only looking at about a $450. Add an extra $0.10 for premium fuel and it adds a whopping $13.30 annually.
The items I would be more concerned about are tires and brakes. The LR4 is a 5,800 lb vehicle. My dealership was very forthcoming with me in terms of brakes and tires. The factory Continental Contact 4x4 tires last between 15K and 20K miles. Replacement cost is about $1,200. Brakes also need to be replaced, somewhere between 20K and 25K miles - and while I have not received a direct estimate, figure this to be between $1400 and $1500.
Over time, these are the items that will end up costing you from a maintenance perspective. Gas on a $50K - $60K vehicle becomes somewhat trivial.
Wish you the best in your hunt. I can promise you won't be disappointed if you buy one. I can also promise you won't miss the extra $40 a month in gas
Best Regards,

Hi, have done under 3000km so motorvstill expected to be a little tight. Can average 8-9 litres per 100km on the highway at 110km per hour and 11-13 L/100km round town. Diesel. No way I would buy a petrol powered 4x4 of any kind given need to tow horse float and sheer weight of LR4.
