Gas Tank Capacity

Gas Tank Capacity
So the LR4 supposedly holds 22 gallons or so, why is it that when my range countdown gets to 0 miles, I can only put no more than 18 gallons of gas in the tank? I should be putting 21+ in.
Is this so you can run out of gas off road and have enough to get you back to pavement? Very frustrating and I am scared to truely test it and see how far I can go.

Very true that the gas keeps the pump cool depending on where the pump is located in the tank.
Doesn't seem to be an issue with other vehicle manufacturers though. In my old X5, the countdown mileage was spot on and for a tank that held 22.7 gallons, I put in over 22 gallons from time to time. A 4 gallon reserve is overkill in my opinion.
Anybody put in more that 20 gallons inthier LR4?

This may be inappropriate, as a response...but I did a roundtrip running the 2013 LR4 to nearly empty.
It was mostly highway traffic, averaging 70+ mph.
This is what I got:
342.9 miles total on my Trip A - I ran for 35 miles with the computer reading "0 miles to empty". The computer also indicated 17.4 AVG miles per gallon.
I filled up the tank, adding 21.296 gallons. If I do the math, 342.9 miles / 21.296 gallons, I get about 16 mpg.
--So at 16 mpg X 23 gallon tank - I estimate the total miles could be around 368. So I could have gotten around 20+ more miles.
Here's a quick chart I may use to estimate distance left , even when "0 miles to empty" is indicated:
If AVG MPG is 13, then 23 gallon tank X 13mpg = around 299 miles
AVG MPG 14, then 23 X 14 = 322 miles
AVG MPG 15, then 23 X 15 = 345 miles
AVG MPG 16, then 23 X 16 = 368 miles
AVG MPG 17, then 23 X 17 = 391 miles
These are most like the very "best" case. Things such as climate, road conditions, traffic-stop/go, wind, tides; will all have an affect on actual milage attained.
Take this with caution, as the manual indicates that running out of gas is not good for your engine, so heed the advice of your LR4 computer.

People post this about every make and model of car, in every forum I've ever seen. Usually manufacturers list how much fuel the tank holds, not how much you can safely use.
Your BMW must have been unique if you could drive it to zero miles and suck almost every last drop from the tank. Even fuel efficient cars like Honda Accords have a 2.5 gallon reserve when the refuel light comes on. I'd expect my land rover to give me close to double that, since it has half the mpg.

Nothing unique about the BMW other then its computer was more accurate. I never ran it bone dry, but with a 22.7 gallon tank, I regulaly put in 21 + gallons and its milaeage countdown was spot on. In other words reliable.
Seems like a worthless "tool" on the LR4 to have such inaccurate readings. 4 gallons of "Fluff" (almost 20% of you gas tank) is playing it too safe in my opinion. A responsible owner will fill up accordingly based on the appropriate conditions.
