Default High mileage guys- what’s your LR4 oil change regimen?

In hopes of not opening an oil debate....

Guys with LR4 5.0L engines and high miles that have had NO engine issues- what oil change interval, brand, and weight of oil have you used? I know there’s a lot of LR4’s out there that have had no engine issues (even before late 2012).

Ill be doing my first change soon with a full synthetic 5W20 and follow a 5k interval most likely.

Just an anecdotal study here.... 🍿

I apologize in advance for the faux- pax of multi- forum post of this thread.

I like to see the science! Has anyone with 2010-2012 had an oil analysis that they could share? Either before or just before failure.

I had a Blackstone Laboratories analysis ($30) done as a baseline at my last oil change at 112k miles (2013 LR4).
I will extend the interval as they test the viscosity and my numbers were very good. Seems like there was lots of life left in the oil with low metal numbers (Castol Edge Extended Performance 0w20).
I was especially curious about the Aluminum numbers. I would expect my 2013 has the updated chain guides, but wonder if anyone with worn guides would see a high Al number.
My engine is a bit noisy but seems to be fuel pump tappet and injector sounds.

When the oil is about 10k miles old, I plan to send a sample in. I will hold off changing the oil until I see a result.

Being led by the science has to be the way to go. So many posts everywhere by the 'I change my oil every 3k miles' crowd, with the oil companies just laughing their asses off at that stunt. I have a 2014 LR4 with the 3.0 SCV6. The only place I can find to buy the oil (other than the stealer at $19 per qt) is Atlantic British at not a lot less. When dealing with that kind of cost of oil (and the obvious point about natural resources) I think these sorts of oil analysis offer really good value. I've never done one, but I'm going to try it with my LR4 at around 8K miles on the most recent oil change.

I was interested to read that the new Defender has a 20K+ mile oil change interview. Analysis on those oils at say 15K would be interesting.

The Castrol Extended performance line is what I’m considering (even though I’m having trouble finding it locally). I’d like to stick with the originally recommended 5W20 weight, but the local LR dealer has switched to 0W20 as have some independents. This may be somewhat motivated by the fact that Castrol has discontinued the Edge Pro OE 5W20.

Thanks for the replies. I did get an order in at AB before their stock of the 5W20 runs out.

If you wouldn’t mind, post up the results. Would be interesting to see how they compare to mine. I’m going to send mine in for a second one at 10k miles (on the oil). Should be next month or so.

I'm at 130K miles on my 2013 and the timing chains remain quiet. I've changed the oil and filter every 5K miles using Mobil 1 5W20 EP. The Extended Performance version is an upgrade over basic Mobil 1. Buy it at Walmart in 5 liter bottles.

Great info, thanks, just what I’m looking for!

I did just find on the Mobil website that their 5W20 Extended Performance oil meets the WSS M2C925-A standard. None of their other oils that I could find specifically mention meeting that specific standard.
