So...I've always really wanted an LR4. 3.5 years ago I got one 2016 - with 49k miles (Cost me 43K). I have only driven the car 10k miles since I got it - so it's now at 59K
2 years ago the gear shifter circle in the middle got stuck and wouldn't move - i had it towed to a shop that replaced that and fixed a bunch of other things they claimed I needed for 5k. It was back to working fine.
Fast forward to this last Tuesday am. I went to turn the car on and and the gear shifter circle would not rise up and the dash said that it was not in park (which it was - otherwise the car wouldn't have turned off). (On other screens it did also say HDC Not Available -system fault. And then at one point it say transmission fault). If i didn't press on the break i could turn the radio and air and power on - but no engine. I had it towed to a local garage - they ordered a new gear shifter (which would have been the second replacement in two years) - while doing that they told me i needed new tires so i got that - was supposed to be 3k for everything. Friday came, when it was supposed to be ready and they told me they tried the new gear module and it didn't work and that they can't fix it and i should tow it to Land Rover. So I had it towed to LR (with the new tires that I am no furious about lol). After 5 days they called me today and told me I have two options:
1. Replace Valve Body and TCM for 14k (which they can't guarantee will work)
or
2. Replace the entire transmission for 20k
This is a car that had no engine issues and was working perfectly fine on Monday. There is no way on earth I am paying that - but not sure what to do. I assume they will offer me almost nothing for it. Is my best bet to tow it to Carmax or take it to yet another place for an opinion?
My hunch is that I should cut my losses - but it's so upsetting. From what I've been reading people have had these issues but they never result in this sort of wildly expensive insanity!
This is the fault info:
ABLE TO DUPLICATE CUSTOMER'S CONCERN. GEAR SHIFTER DOES NOT
OPERATE. SCANNED VEHICLE AND THERE IS A FAULT FOR
TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE OFFLINE NOT RESPONDING.
DIAGNOSED FUSES RELAYS ON ENGINE FUSE BOX COMPARTMENT. GEAR
SHIFT COMPONENTS AND MODULES. CHECK FOR POWER AND GROUND ON
GEAR SHIFT MODULE AND THERE IS POWER AND GROUND AND SIGNAL.
VISUAL INSPECTED BODY CONTROL MODULE AND FUSES FOR POSSIBLE
SHORT CIRCUIT, ALL COMPONENTS OK NO BLOWN FUSE OF RELAY.
LIFTED VEHICLE AND CHECKED TCM AND VALVE BODY POWER AND
GROUND CONNECTION AND THERE IS POWER AND GROUND SIGNAL ON
CAN HIGH AND CAN LOW. RECOMMENDING REPLACING TRANSMISSION
DUE TO TCM AND VALVE BODY NOT RESPONDING WITH VEHICLE.
I had a similar issue on a 2011 LR4 about 3 years. Was fearing the worse, but ultimately, only had to replace the transmission chain for about $600. Now over the past few weeks, same issue appears again - transmission gear box / shifter is lose, hard to get into drive, slips into neutral on turns or when stopped. Shows up as a "transmission fault" this morning. Getting towed in shortly. Wish me luck!

The shifters on the 2011 are completely different from the rotary ones on the 2016.
So that first place you brought it to seems like they hosed you. 5k for a shift know "and some other stuff"? The shift **** is literately a 20 min job to replace it.
I did have a friend who had a 2016 and had the same shift **** issue. However he said the shop was having some weird electrical issue after it was replaced and it had been stuck in the shop for a couple weeks after. I never checked back in to see what the issue was, but will see what I can find and what his solution was.
I really cant imagine there can be a mechanical fault in the transmission related to a simple electrical fault in the shift **** mechanisms. Maybe they shorted something, or used a **** coded to a RR instead of an LR4....but thats pure speculation.
My indy put a remanufactured **** in mine but accidentally put the bad one back in...instead of the good. So it failed again a few days later. He apologized for the mix up...

Vehicle was towed to our shop. Re traced all the steps the dealer did and then some.
Dropped the pan and found weird looking shavings. Not magnetic. After seeing that we realized a mechanical failure caused the TCM to fail. Trans cooler lines had a steady leak, so probably low fluid.
