Default LR4 Purchase Advice

Hi, I am new to the forum and have just begun the search for an LR4. I have located a nice 2011 with 105,000 miles. The owner has provide a diagnostic and there are a few codes. I was hoping someone could tell me if any of them are something to be worried about, I know the p0018-00 is definitely a concern but am not sure how much. The vehicle has good service records but hasn't had any major work done except the following. Other than normal maintenance not much else had been done, but it has been serviced regularly. The owner said the shop told him the engine sounded fine and he wasn't worried about the timing chain yet but knew it was an issue. Looking for an advice concerning these issues.
  • Intake manifold gasket(s) replaced
  • Antifreeze/coolant checked
  • Thermostat replaced
  • Oil cooler seal(s) replaced
  • Lower radiator hose replaced
  • Water pump replaced
  • Drive belt(s) replaced
  • Air filter replaced

Just thinking about the suspension alone (and assuming that's the totality of the work that's been done on the vehicle), at that mileage the front and rear upper and lower controls arms would probably be shot, together with the ARBs, links, etc. Ditto the front hubs. You'd need to factor in a good couple of grand to sort that out (which includes 4 wheel alignment). If no mention of fluid changes, you'd need to do that lot, also. (Diffs and transmission (probably including filter at that age), coolant, brake fluid, etc).

You can save a lot of money if you're prepared to do these jobs yourself, but even parts alone won't be cheap.

At that age you'd certainly want to drive it and get it properly inspected if you're not familiar with these vehicles. They're amazing, but it's very easy to buy a colossal money pit if you're not careful, which will just **** you off.

Thank you, that is what I was thinking. I don't mind doing some of the work myself. But don't want to step into someone else's problem. I was thinking if I could get it for the right price I could have a shop take care of all the needed items to get a fresh start. Other than that I guess I will keep searching.

Buy the best you can. Service history is really important; proof of work, receipts, etc. Do some research on parts and when pricing my very strong advice is only to use OEM parts. Maybe not LR branded, but OEM. You'll spend a little more but it's worth it every time. Your (no doubt) friendly LR dealership can (but may not) also print off the service history of the vehicle for everything that's been done by them. It can be quite revealing. Don't be in too much of a rush would be my advice. Ask questions here.

So I dug in a little more on this one. It is super clean and fully loaded. The 45,000 mile service was done at a dealer and at 54,000 the power steering and brake fluid were flushed. It has had regular maintenance that shows on the carfax. It was just inspected at a good indy shop and there wasn't anything to do.

For the timing chain is that something that needs done because of the error or is it something that can wait until there is a rattle?
Is there a price that makes sense? I am looking at a lot of these and very few actually have record of timing chain being done. I was thinking if I could buy for the right pricing then just have the work done. Does this make sense and does 13K seem like to much. Most of the ones I am finding are around 16K and not showing a lot of major work done. It is interesting that I have looked at quite a few carfax reports most show regular maintenance but not any major repairs.
