Default LR4 Tapping / Knocking noise 62' Plate

Hi everyone,

Got a tapping / knocking noise from just underneath the engine cover - took to local garage who listened briefly & said they thought it might be the bottom end.
Being told it needs a new / reconditioned engine??!!
No engine warning lights.

Any ideas / advice - thanks

That’s a pretty severe recommendation from someone who just listened briefly. Did they say why they thought it was the bottom end? Bottom end problems, like crankshafts, tend to sound heavier/deeper than top end problems, and can often be heard in the cabin. The diesel D4’s have had crankshaft issues, but I have not read any reports of the gas engines having bottom end problems.

Pretty tough for anyone here to give advice just based on the information in the post, aside from maybe taking it to a different mechanic. If you wanted to post a video of the sound and let us know what engine you have, how many miles, whether there are any codes, any other relevant info, we could try to guess at the problem.

Yes, you're right.

Arranged for the car to be picked up & relayed to an engine specialist for rebuild.....recovery guy lifted bonnet, placed his hand on top of the engine cover & said it was vibrating & being noisy from the top of the engine.... suggested it might worn out hydraulic tappits?

Will upload a video.... thxs

62 Plate is UK jargon, so there’s a very good possibility this is a diesel car.
