Question Squeaky Rattling Sound in Engine While Idling

Good day all.

When I start up my Discovery 4 there is a sqeaky rattling noise that I hear quite audibly when I am inside the car that was not there before. The noise is like something is loose or metal is grinding on metal. When I step outside the car, I do not hear the noise. When I rev the engine higher than the idle rev (1000 rpm), the noise seems to disappear and then comes back again when I stop revving the engine.

I have attached an audio recording of the noise. At marker 24, I start to rev the engine and the noise disappears for 10 seconds and when I stop revving the engine from marker 34, the noise starts again. At marker 47-48 as I switch off the engine, the noise is a bit more clearer.

Any diagnostic assistance will be appreciated.

My guess is you need a new cooling fan as the clutch in your current fan is seizing.

Hi Zwyde, have you manage to resolve this issue? I have a similar sound on my Disco 4…
