Surging RPM, pinging, low rpm hesitation & no check engine light
"I wish my check engine light would come on." -said no Rover owner ever! I hate my check engine light but right now I wish it would come on. Here is what is going on. I can hear some pinging at slow speeds and low rpm and I use the highest tier unleaded. On a steady climb up a mtn road at 40 to 55 mph I can see the rpm undulate back and forth about 100rpm and feel it too. When climbing a steep hill at lower rpms, I fee some hesitation. And when at Idle my exhaust sounds like a lobbed cam in on old hot rod with it a bit uneven in the exhaust sound. All this and no check engine light. Under heavy throttle it is strong and normal. My independent Rover shop hooked it up to their advanced computer and couldn't find any stored codes. For weeks Ive had computers looking for stored codes and nothing. They even looked at a live reading of injectors and they were within range. I recently had the spark plugs changed , any little valves and sensor in the intake system, changed the two orange rubber PCV breather things on the valve cover and had the intake cleaned out. 2011 LR4 has 150,000 miles and I'm not sure the O2 sensors have ever been changed. I usually get a code for that. Injectors are original, but again no codes. The only other bit of info that might be relevant is this. About two months ago I needed to floor the accelerator. A massive could of black smoke shot out the back of the car and the car went in to limp mode. I had it towed to the shop. The mechanic found the PCV valves worn out and torn. He said this created a vacuum problem and oil was suck in to the intake manifold.The PCV valves were replaced and the intake was take off and cleaned. My hunch leads me to believe that a cylinder is misfiring because of an ejector. Can anyone suggest what to try or do next?

Did you find out what is that?
Greetings. Similar behavior from my ‘13 LR4 with 82k miles. Two mechanics (one LR specialist) thought it was carbon buildup on the valves. I ran 8 cans of LiquiMoly Valve Cleaner through it to no avail. I finally resigned to take it to the dealer. Even though no CEL, they changed both passenger-side oxygen sensors and that cured the problem. I believe their computer can read real-time behavior which is how they determined that the sensors were out of tolerance. $1200 bill was ridiculous. But it’s fixed. Good luck.
