I'm replacing the HG on my 2012 LR4 170,000 miles. I'm replacing the timing gear set since I will be in there that far. My question is how do you know if the cam sprockets need replaced? If so, is there a good aftermarket option that isn't $450 each? Thanks

 

Check wear on the teeth. You can see the alternating pattern from the chain on the teeth.

My pleasure. My advice is change them if you can get away with by only refinancing half of your house.

Nothing worse than doing timing again because you cut a corner.

 

Yes 100%. A-Premium has a set of 4 for under $1000. I've used their parts before, but this application demands perfection.

 

Just like on my bikes... whenever the chains are replaced, so are the sprockets.
