Default What Synthetic Oil to Use?

Trying to figure out which oils you guys recommend. I know the manufacturer recommends Castrol
Professional Edge 5w-20 but that stuff is nearly impossible to find. Are there any other oil out there that you recommend???

My independent mechanic uses AMZOIL 10w40 in my ‘00 Disco II. His shop specializes in British vehicles (MG, Triumph, etc) as well as “normal” cars and only uses the synthetics. In addition he uses a GM zinc additive that works extremely well in my truck, currently has 275K after an engine rebuild about 35K ago. I’m very pleased with how the oil and how the engine runs. Indiana can be near 100 degrees in the summer and below 0 in the winters and I’ve had no problems at all.

The SCV6 3.0L engine fitted to the last LR4s needs Castrol Edge Pro OE 0W20, which is pretty much dealer only (Atlantic British have it). If you mean the 5.0L that oil is slightly easier to get and again Atlantic British have a kit for about $130 I think with discount. I'm sticking with the LR recommendation for my 3.0L. Sticking to the 10k mile internal the cost isn't much of a factor when I consider what one spends on fuel. (My LR4 is also still within warranty, hence reluctance to change from the recommended oil).

I use 5W/20 Royal Purple, used to use Castrol 5W/20 but switched. Never had a problem with either. Both are used in my 7 vehicles. My previous vehicles were owned for 14 and 15 years. towing and cars were raced. I have in 53 years changed oil at 1/2 the dealer interval and do not have engine or chain problems. would change every other race or competition in cars or any extended tow. Since my LR4 has no dipstick I consider it a safety to change more often.

I would suggest doing a good search on the results, but the Shell Rotella T6 has a long history of fantastic anti-wear and longevity. They just moved from the Rotella T6 to marketing a line specifically for "Gas Truck", which comes in a line of different weights now, but everyone uses the T6 and new line across a ton of platforms. Especially people in the turbocharged car enthusiasts groups, Subaru's and extreme temps, etc etc.

Plus the cost is great.

Shell Rotella is good. I use Mobile 1 Heavy Duty Truck for my GTI, which is turbo charged; another good oil. It's marketed for diesels but is excellent for petrol turbos. Rotella is also popular with the GTI community. I haven't seen it recommended for LR petrol engines before.
