i believe the transmission in my o4 freelander is suspect along with the engine.
looking into a complete swap into domestic engine and drivetrain. has anybody done it or know of the desired route?

 

I want to wish you the best of luck in finding what you are looking for in the way of engine/drivetrain swap. If you could somehow come up with the Rover diesel engine that they used in the European freelanders, that may be a good option, as I understand that they hold up extremely well. Maybe one could be found in Canada? Not sure how hard they would be to bring into this country. In my opinion, you are wise to get rid of the original drivetrain and engine, as they are horrible, to put it mildly.

 

Just to save you some searching, no, we got no Diesels from LR up here either. Nothing since the 80's and an odd Jeep Liberty or Cherokee.

 

Hey, when I was with a Land Rover dealership I had this discussion with the regional ASR. Though I have not attempted it the very good possibility of a 2.5 Ford Escape engine and trans drop in conversion can be done. Ford owned LR at the time and the Platform of the two vehicles is very similar.

 

Someone on one of the aussie boards got a long way with a swap. Used a Mazda engine cause they use the same tranny.

He got the engine in looking good, then stopped posting.
