I'm not ready to buy aftermarket wheels so I'm stuck using OEM 8 inch wide rims. Supposedly, the rims on entry level P38's in Europe and the spares in early P38's in the States are 7 inch wide steelies but I've never seen any. I picked up a set of alloys with some scars for $250 shipped to my door a while back and was planning to mount up another set of 265/75's, but I'm really liking the look and added clearance of the 235/85's.

From all I have read, there are no 7 inch wide Rover alloys. They are all 8 inch. The only Rover wheels that will fit a D2 that are 7 inches wide are steel and not readily available in the States although I did find one: 00 01 02 03 04 Land Rover Discovery Wheel Discovery Steel 16x7 Spare | eBay A full set of these would be cool. I could paint them grey to match the truck. Maybe I can start with one and collect them as I find them!

I wonder what the difference in offset is with those steelies.

No idea. I think the spares in the 95-97 P38's were steel. I wonder if Paul Grant has any kicking around. I would be willing to bet there are plenty in junkyards that get overlooked. I see the alloys getting stacked up but the rusty steel rim under the cargo area mat gets to go in the crusher.

I like the utilitarian look of them. No holes, not even an attempt at dressing them up. I bet a set in body color on a D2 would look sweet. They look like the rims on my '79 Malibu after the hubcaps flew off. They would let loose whenever I turned too fast. I was tearing out of a campus lot once in college and one flew off and went into a crowd at the bus stop. Nothing like taking a speeding hubcap to the back of the leg. Needless to say I didn't go and retrieve that one.

The new tires are on. Michelin 275/70R 18. Stock suspension. No lift. They sure fill out the wheel wells. I probably would have had to trim the bumper, if the bumper was still on there, but its not. They did rub on the plastic trim that runs under the doors, but that was easy to trim back with a cut off wheel. This weekend I will take it out to the national forest near Ocala and see if I can make it rub anywhere else.

If you plan on lifting it you may want to cease trimming. There's a good chance all those spots that rub now won't rub with a lift. You could be trimming more than necessary.

The 275/70/18's went on fine. No lift required. They rub alittle in a tight turn or on rough terrain. I might eventually put a 2 inch spring spacer in there but for now, I'm happy the way it is.
