want to try and get a front pinion guard fabbed at work, do i really need that vibration damper wheel?

I wonder the exact thing. My classic didn't have one. Discovery does. What does it do exactly?

You don't need it. Although there is a spare engine/transfercase mount hidden in there.

got it fabbed up , need to do the bolt holes and some paint, will try to do pic tommorrow

It's a harmonic damper. I never saw any difference with or without. But then I run 8-ply tires.

Makes sense. Seems far fetched. Never seen another vehicle with one.
