Default should I modify

I am going to purchase a 98 or older Rover or a 2000 or newer Disco. I live 20 miles offroad from any pavement. It's a very rough road, washboard, rocks, mud, sand, dirt....2000 ft. elevation change also. I was wondering about how either vehicle would hold up, especially stock. Any suggestions about modifications? I take this trip at least twice a week, in fact, after I get off the dirt road I decend 2000 more feet to town, thats aloy of climbing also. Thanks.

And I thought I lived in the boonies.... I don't have either of these fine choices, but from the forums it appears the newer units have lots of gadgets that can cause problems. With constant real heavy use, all the time, a less sophisticated (electronics, etc.) machine might be easier to maintain. If you order parts on line does FedEx just toss them out the window when flying over?

That's good. Actually Fed Ex won't come out here. UPS delivers but they have a custom made Ford 350, jacked up, large lug tires, with a box on back. What you said makes sense. I had a 95 Disco that ran good due to the lack of frills, thanks. I may try to find a newer one with some suspension mods however, we'll see.

Buy a Disco and not a Rover, they were junk.
As for what to modify, at least plan on a lift/suspension and good tires.

Sounds like my kind of place to live! A stock Disco is pretty capable. I'm a fan of older ones with CDL due to being more simplistic. Used ones with a 2" lift aren't hard to find either.

thanks guys. I think I'll go for a Disco again, too many negative opinions about the Rover, see you out there.

Let us know what you find and make sure to have a good Rover mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection to save you from some possible problems.

Might think about an extra tire carrier somewhere - one may not be enough. Bet you will go through some brake pads, too. As scarce as parts are for these, you certainly may want to have stock of basics on hand. You probably won't notice as much oil leaks as us flatlanders, the road and rock dust will soak it up.
