Default 2018 D5 HSE TD6 Questions/Advice

Apologies in advance for the long winded backstory: I Bought my first Disco new in 95. 250k miles later sold it and transitioned to Honda Odysseys (hopefully you didn't just spew your drink out your nostrils) which I'm a huge fan of but moving on after 2 vans, half a million miles and 20 years. During those years I've owned a 87 ex-mod D110 and now a 97 D90 NAS. Just establishing that I'm a vehicular sadist and committed to the LR brand. At the suggestion of my good friend and LR guru Jake Krug, I'm ogling a 32k mile Disco V HSE TD6 primarily because of the power plant. It's lacking a tow pkg and counter-intuitively desired heated seats (I reside in Florida) but it's in pristine condition and perfect in every other way. My questions are this: 1/ can it be reprogrammed to not require DEF? 2/ Are they wired for tow hitch addition simply requiring hardware addition? 3/ Considering nearly 8k lbs towing cap must you add an additional oil + trans cooler? 4/ Do the front seats have heating coils embedded and if so can it be modded to add heating to the seats? Lastly, how are these trucks overall reliability wise? Cheers, Rob

  • Disabling DEF appears to be a combination of component removal + software reprogramming. From what I have gathered, the DEF tunes are for off-road use only. CA is notorious for emissions regulations, but I'm not sure how strict FL is.
  • Not sure on tow hitch, but I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult. Hopefully others will chime in.
  • I haven't come across other posts needing oil/trans cooling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • No clue on the heated seats.
  • From the posts I've seen, reliability appears to be a gamble. Some have had constant troubles with the Td6, others sing praises. General consensus is, Td6 hates short [school run, grocery] drives; it needs longer freeway runs to ensure operating temps, DPF regens etc.
Overall, I'd advise having an extended warranty for the peace of mind.
I'd rather factor in the additional warranty cost, instead of fretting about an unforeseen repair bill.

All the best OP and do keep us posted. If it helps, feel free to post the sale listing here, I did the same to seek feedback before I took the Td6 plunge.

Velocity Automotive Performance can provide a DPF/EGR/DEF delete with there tune, but you have to block EGR, gut dpf, scr, cat. (they don't and won't list delete on website.)

That's where it gets complicated, you have to cut and reweld ..... Finding a shop to break the law might me difficult.

( just to be clear these tunes and deletes are for off road use only)
