New configuration to me. There is no access in the rear to remove brake pads after removing pins. Can anyone explain the process to remove and replace pads? Can rotors be turned? How to remove rotors too perhaps?
I guess I’ll need to answer my own question…. Seems the only way to do it is to remove the entire caliper. PIA! I’ll add some blue loctite and crank them down.
Need to do pads and rotors on my L494 which has the same or similar front calipers. Can you explain what the process of replacing the pads ended up being?
In order to get to pads the entire caliper has to come off. Two bolts per caliper if I recall. They should be replaced according to Land Rover. I'd use a breaker bar to get them off because you'll get a feel for how tight they should be. Basically as tight as you can get them with a breaker bar and then another push.
Once you get the caliper off I put mine on a few boxes just the right size so they don't hang freely from brake hoses. From here I used a wood clamp to compress each side of the caliper with a pad still installed so as to compress two per side together. Unfortunately I made the mistake of using inferior parts. I should have reused the OE pad springs after giving them a cleaning. The aftermarket pins were too loose and ended up making a clanking noise over small bumps. I had to redo the entire job so that I could bend the AFTERMARKET spring clip to get more tension. I also added RTV to prevent them from clanking.
Driver side had the wear sensor, which I was able to carefully remove and reuse since my warning light never came on. Just be careful not to loose the little metal clip from the wear sensor. It will probably stick to the vehicle when you remove the sensor.
Oh, and in the picture you can see the Harbor Freight Pin Punches I used to remove pin the holds pads in place.
