Buying Guidance for a 2018 Discovery HSE
Greetings Everyone,
As the title states, I’m seeking some buying guidance on a used 2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE. It’s had two owners, clean Carfax with the windshield replaced, and nothing repetitive jumping out on the records.
VIN: SALRR2RVXJA051498, 36,200 miles, $42,900.
It is on the local Bommarito Nissan (Ballwin, MO) lot where I’ve bought a new truck in the very recent past. I have a good relationship with the sales rep and the dealership. They’ve invited me to take it to the Land Rover dealer for a pre purchase inspection. I’ll definitely do that.
I’ve never owned a Land Rover Discovery. I owned a few older Range Rovers (1995; 2003). Any thoughts / advice on the 2018 Discovery HSE? Should I consider other years or trims; What about the diesel? Lastly, as I don’t need the third row seats, how about the Velar?
Thanks in advance for any guidance/ advice you’re willing to offer.

Would definitely get the LR dealer to check it out. Make sure it hasn't had accident damage etc
I've got a 2018 HSE (the Lux trim). Had it since new and done about 65k miles. So your one is pretty modest mileage. It's a great car. Other than the leaky windscreen and a couple of early software issues it has been totally trouble free. And still goes great. It's terrific to drive
I personally prefer the gas engine for better acceleration.
Not really many known issue areas. And the dealer will of course know what to look for
I would just wonder why you'll be the third owner in ~4 years. Seems like a fast turnover. Maybe a good explanation
Personally think it's a much better drive than the smaller LR / Range Rovers.
If you really don't need the 3rd row and space, look at the F Pace which is great too.

The diesel is just fine on acceleration. That turbo really kicks. That said, unless you do a fair amount of long distance travel, the gas is a better choice. Too much around town and you'll run into regen issues and the stop/start is not good to have on an oil burner.
The Disco v. Velar is really about function v. style. The Disco is more truck-like and less precious.
