Angry CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE! Looking for experience...

In attempt to keep this brief, I'll get right to it.

I've got/had a 2020 si6 Discovery V which I absolutely love/d and took great care of. It could've been pulled into a showroom and sold as a new car if you never checked the odometer! Without fail, it received an oil change every 12-15k miles, along with lube, filters, etc. It currently has 70,000 miles on the clock.
  • Driving home on a Thursday evening (8~ miles) I noticed an intermittent rattling or vibration like sound coming from the engine compartment. Only happened at highway speeds and would self-correct after 10 or so seconds. Without any depth of knowledge, I thought it sounded like a loose nut/bolt perhaps. Parked the car for the night.
  • The next day I was out running local errands (5~ miles of driving), the truck began misfiring horribly - to the point where I immediately aborted what plans I had and attempted to return home. The check engine light came on, so I instead drove directly to my local mechanic shop (3-4 miles).
  • Summarizing, from the onset of the rattling noise to dropping the vehicle at the mechanics shop, I drove about 15 miles, 4 miles post engine light. This all progressed at an incredible rate.
Mechanic spent a day or so with the truck and informed me it looked bad. They reccomended I get the car to my local Land Rover dealer for further diagnosis so I had it towed there. Land Rover called me the next day to inform me the truck needed a full engine replacement + two cat converters + misc at a cost of $60,000+. Obviously, this totals out the truck.

I've read countless blogs/forums/articles about the Disco V needing engine replacement at a wildly premature age. I've read about Consumer Protection laws which may help in the sense that a well maintained car of this value it is expected to perform far beyond this general age. Again, there is no known cause for this engine failure however i suspect it was a result of a huge timing chain issue (rattling noise was chain, maybe?).

My contact at Land Rover said he is willing to "fight like hell" for me in attempting to seek assistance from Land Rover Goodwill. However, I am not at all optimistic understanding that even a 50% discount, would basically still total the car. With that said, I'm also preparing my attorney - just to have him on standby should LRNA neglect to step in, as expected.

This is an outrageous failure on a vehicle that is expected to last.

Has anyone here ever had any issues comparable or the same? If so, any insight is MUCH appreciated. Beyond that, has anyone here ever had any experience with Land Rover goodwill for service/parts? Any tips?

Thank you all in advance, very much appreciate any help/insight ya can offer.

Default Update...

If anyone is still visiting back to the post I created here and hopeful for an update or can use some advice... I'm happy to report I have the truck back, after a long wait, and at zero cost to me. LRNA stepped in and covered the engine & cat converters replacement IN FULL. Found this out months ago, but wanted to actually get the truck back in my driveway before reporting such! Unbelievable service experience. I will add, I have a deep history with my local LR dealership and have come to know the service manager well. In addition to that, LRNA was pleased to see my ownership history with them, which I'm assuming had a significant impact. All in all though, against all odds, they stepped up HUGELY and covered the repairs and parts in ENTIRETY. Still blown away and hard to believe my own reality as it relates to this ordeal... Absolutely made me a customer for life.

I saw several videos of the 4 cylinder version with loose timing chain issues, fortunately the loose chain was replaced prior to fix the rattle which the owner had noticed and no real engine damage had happened. I'm not sure if that was your issue or not. Dealers typically say "engine replacement" mainly because they don't want to strip the engine and do real engine work. It's possible there might be a real mechanic out there who was willing to fix the engine, if it is fixable.

That is terrifying to read; curious to see how things go on your case though.
Please keep the community posted, if it's not too much hassle.

all the best OP

Wow so sorry this has happened, it does kinda sound like the timing chains went out randomly causing the rattling and they might have caused further damage. The 3.0 v6 gas has been known to have timing chain issues. Hopefully they cover it under goodwill but honestly in my opinion I really don't think they will. I wish you all the best, I have heard doing oil changes more frequently can postpone this type of issue for anyone else reading this.

Probably not what you are hoping for but maybe you can get Land Rover to buy the car back as part of a trade-in deal. They might be willing to give you a lot more if they can keep you as a customer. The more you can talk to corporate and keep digging there the better. If someone says “no” or “impossible” just call back and keep asking to escalate to managers until you get somewhere. Be persistent and firm but stay calm in spite of what a ridiculous situation it is.

I got years of factory warranty extensions and payments made from Volkswagen just by heavily engaging with corporate. With Porsche we had several very expensive issues just out of warranty and got about $7000 worth of repairs cut to $2200 for the same work. Just keep after it!

Default What was the resolution?

my husband’s discovery (we bought in 2018) just stopped while driving. They said something about oil pipe and we repaired (paid little less than 4k), during my drive home, engine over heating sign came on. Next morning, I drove it to the local road and coolant low light came on, and my husband said it clearly leaked at the garage. Took the car in and they said the engine needs replacement.

I am interested to find out what your resolution was. Our warranty just ended. They said to replace the engine will cost 35k…

Any recommendations?

Default 2018 LR Discovery Total Engine Failure 51k miles.

I used to believe the horror stories always happened to other people.

We have had the same experience. Total engine failure. $39,000 to replace. Wait, we'll help all we can....No, we can't help.

Beautiful car, built very poorly with even less appreciation for their customer base.

Just starting into the battle with LR. will keep you informed. Feel free to email for details.
