Hi everyone,

I hear a clunking/Knocking noise from the rear axle on my disco 5.
The noise is only heard at low speeds (under 50Km/h 30mph),
only when turning (roundabouts, intersections, and simply by turning the steering wheel slightly)
and only when accelerating slightly.
Just put the steering wheel straight back and it disappear.
If you accelerate with a little determination, it doesn't show up.


The car is MY2018, 3.0l supercharged V6 engine, has 126.000km (approximately 78.000 miles)
and has an active differential at the rear.
I bought the car in June 2025, previous maintenance has been done regularly in Land Rover.

These are the actions already taken with my trusted mechanic (not a Land Rover dealer):
1) Change the front differential gearbox transfer case and rear differential oils: Nothing... it actually seems worse.
2) The rear differential rubber mounts seem fine.
3) I disconnected the electrical wiring to the rear differential for a few days: The noise hasn't returned... the ride even seems smoother with less vibration.
4) We did a TC reset

Before proceeding with another oil change or replacing the rear differential (€3,000 for the part alone),
I'm looking for some advice...

I have had the same issue for years.

Land Rover Dealer was 'never able to replicate'. Also have the active rear differential and changed all fluids at 48,500 in May 2025 (all clean and free of debris). Now at 59,000 miles... purchased new March 2020. Essentially letting it ride for now.

 

This (low-speed) drivetrain clunk has come up before. it seems to be normal behavior.
I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Will just third that I get a light thump occasionally as well. Glad to hear everyone is just letting it ride. Does not seem to have gotten any worse

 

I also have this clunk at times. 2019 HSE Luxury TD6. I'm impressed by the Disco. I have taken it through some very technical off road trails especially in Sedona and Moab. I also did the rear diff fluid change. The transfer case was done in the last 20k miles by a jlr dealer. Currently it has 80k miles.

 

If you have the rear locking dif, then it's that. I had it twice, on both occasions I had the Diff replaced (under warranty). Flushing the Diff does offer some short-term relief.

 

A double or triple flush of my center e-diff and transfer case fixed it. Also did the rear diff just to be sure. The dealer double flushed it then gave it back to me after resetting the adaptations but filled the center diff only about 1/2 way so it came back. Friends at an Indy shop checked and found the fluid low and no signs of leaking. Flushed it all and it’s smooth!
