update on diesel exhaust smell in cabin- my 2019 Discovery TD6 has an exhaust leak coming from a flex pipe in the Cross Over Pipe
(LR038751). anyone had this replaced? very little room between the engine and firewall. perhaps and engine out to replace?

after searching through the Italian discovery 5 shop manual and using Google Translate my understanding is the front and rear drive shafts have to be disconnected and the transmission partially lowered to gain working access to the bolts/nuts holding the crossover pipe in place. so a bigger job than i want to tackle. the dealer wants $2,400 CAD (£1,390/€1,610/USD $1,770) parts and labour. my independent repair guy did not want to do it so i will get it done by the dealer who says he has done this repair on a few Disco 5s.

Default We are experiencing the same

So far, the subtle smell hasn't made me feel nauseous or off, but would like to catch it if it's something that can be prevented from turning into something larger. Thanks!
We started experiencing the same issue right about when we saw the DEF ( diesel exhaust fuel ) light came on. We filled it up but the smell persisted. Car is now with the dealer that confirmed there is a leak in the cross vents attached to the exhaust system? So, they want to change to whole things which will cost us 4.5k our vehicle is 80k and under extended warranty which does not cover for exhaust! In fact I’ve learned most warrantees do not cover for exhaust…

Good to know! I had an independent look into it and traced it back to the turbo. He noticed some smoke when pressing on the gas. I’m having him do some additional diagnostics as the preliminary check was brief.

I did find a video on YouTube that also discusses the exhaust line that comes off the turbo tends to come loose, all you have to do is retighten it, but that was on a Range Rover Evoque TD. Hoping that is what has happened on mine.

mine turned into a $6600 C$ ($4900 USD) bill to replace crossover exhaust pipe. not very impressive for a 60k miles vehicle.

Here's the video that I found:

*This is in reference to the 4 cylinder, not the TDV6 found in the Discovery V. Just trying to find as much information as possible on diesel smell leaks. Thanks!

important to note that this video refers to the 4 cylinder diesel in a Range Rover.

my discovery is a V6 diesel.

i had a Muffler shop diagnose my issue. they wanted to fix it and i wanted them to however they ultimately declined to do the work as they had a problem trying to disconnect the front prop shaft. At least with the Discovery 5 it is a somewhat easier task to change the crossover pipe as compared to the Discovery 3,4. There is a good YouTube video showing the entire body coming off to do the crossover pipe.

@delly44 Is that why the cost was $4900 USD because they had to take the body off the replace the crossover pipe on your truck? Did you go through LR or an independent?
