Default Discovery 5 sucks off road? (TC not working?)

What's up ya'll, you may know my truck from this thread: https://landroverforums.com/forum/ne...-111766/page2/

So I have this little party trick I do. When the car is loaded up with people, instead of pulling in or out of my driveway, I turn at the last moment and pull up a fairly steep bank that 99% of vehicles couldn't go up to get out of my yard. To the surprise and delight of my guests (yeah right, everyone I know thinks I'm an idiot), the L322 pulls up it and our with nary a spun wheel.

I Swear, its steeper than it looks.

Even in high range, with no terrain mode selected (and therefore no locking diffs) my L322SC pulls out of it like nothing. You can really feel the front end grip pull the rest of the car up past the halfway point, torque steer and all that. In mud mode, with moth diffs locked, forget about it, it could tow my boat up it.

My L322 has 33" 4 ply Milestar Patagonia on it. They are a fine, mild tread, budget AT tire. Tire pressure whatever door says.

My D5 TDI has 33" Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek on it, they are the most extreme 4 ply AT tire on the market. Tire pressures set low to comfort mode. There is no way the milestars are a better tire for this than the rugged treks.

My D5 can't go up this bank.

It gets to the top, and the front right wheel starts spinning and digging a hole and the whole car stops. Feels like it's completely open diff. The vehicle is doing absolutely no brake differentiating. In mud mode, or rock mode, where the center diff locks up, it seems to do a little better, but ultimately does the same thing and can't even get up the bank. The ONLY time it can do it is in low range. What I cant tell is if thats just because of the lower gear ratio and tires turning slower, or if the car is actually correctly using the center diff and terrain mode only when. its in low?

What is the deal here, I follow the instagram account of a few guys who hardcore wheel their D5 and I feel like i see the same thing, they really struggle to get up banks that are slippery or uneven.

Here is a perfect example of what I am talking about:

I am super bummed about this. Why would it be any different than an L319/20/22? What did they change that a hanging wheel will no longer trigger the TC to clamp the brake?

Does putting the car in low actually change the TC? I can't imagine in that youtube video that guy didn't have it in low.

Does anyone else wheel their D5 and have any experience?

hmm...have you tried turning traction control off? i think it's DSC in the main screen when the LR initially startup. basically, increase wheel spin. also, was it extra muddy conditions or picture perfect like your posted picture?

Look at this video at about 10:45. It's got the front right off the ground but still making forward progress. I'd look at your setup as this isn't the first video I've seen with Disco able to climb without losing traction.

DIsable DSC. Its a simple on/off button near the terrain response ****.

But yes compared to the previous generation of rovers, DSC in the newer vehicles is A LOT more aggressive. In my LR3, I never turned off DSC. Tires spun no matter what. In my D5 it won't spin a tire...ever. On one side that is nice but non-conducive when its time to give it the beans.

In conclusion:
-I would push terrain response in to auto or grass/gravel/snow (whichever mode is easier to engage on the fly) and disable DSC. Do that and try again.
-Due to this being your driveway, you can probably test this out here directly
-Please take video.

LMAO, well guys I am embarrassed to admit, but I guess it was just the DSC. I forgot it even had that button and when I turned it off it climbs right up and out just like my other cars.

On my l322, I forgot it even had that button and I never used it, it didn't seem to matter

On my L320, not only did I never really turn it off, I think it actually off-roaded better with it

I'm still surprised about what it does, given that it's job is to keep the car straight down the road, I wonder why it would allow one wheel to take all the torque and dig a hole.,

That's funny, so it's not the D5 that sucks!

Quick question related to this. I have a gravel road that has a few steep sections and had some issues in snow last winter. I have not tried turning the DSC off, but low range does help. Do folks turn off the DSC and use low range? Thanks!

Life is full of these learning moments. I did the same thing years ago with my Pepper.
