Extended Warranty
You might not need it every day, but when you do, it's a real lifesaver! I think getting an extended warranty can be like having a train horn on a car. It's like having that extra peace of mind knowing you're covered if something unexpected happens. Of course, it's all about weighing the pros and cons. If you plan to keep your car for a long time and want that added protection, then it could be a good idea. But if you're the type who upgrades frequently, maybe it's not worth it. Ultimately, it's your call, but for me, having that warranty is like having a safety net—you hope you never need it, but you're glad it's there just in case!

So I just purchased a new Defender 130, the dealer offered a 84 month extended warranty for approximately $5700. I have 7 days to make up my mind whether to take it or not. Reading the various threads it appears that if it is through JLR it is worth it. Any opinions?
https://factoryprotect.ratessys.com/ looks a good place to compare costs.
I would like to add my experience.
My company Continental, and all the other company's I looked into do not cover emission related items.
So, the one time I almost got to use it, the cost difference was so great I couldn't or wouldn't pay the difference.
warranty labor rate was $135 per hour max they pay., labor hours calculated at 8, only covered the defective part only, not gaskets, and O rings needed.
Dealer labor rate was $250 per hour., labor hour calculated at 12,
Cost difference was $1600.
I paid $3500 for a warranty I never was able to use. I hope you all have better luck.

I have bought extended warranties - once from JLR on new Land Rover and twice on CPO used ones. Great for peace of mind. But I would have been better off self funding every time. They don't always pay out (much less covered than OEM warranty), sometimes only pay part of after diagnostic fee. So if you want peace of mind against an unlikely but very costly event it's a good idea. Otherwise better to put the $ in the bank to cover maintenance and repair costs yourself.
By definition on average they pay out less than they cost otherwise companies wouldn't sell them. So on average you are better off without. It just protects from the downside
By the way I have found price to be highly negotiable. Even from dealer

I agree, just bank the funds you would spend on the warranty.

I'd say a warranty on an LR is more like an airbag than a train horn.

I know first hand.
Put the money into savings at 5%, don't buy the warranty. My TD6 has been very minimal maintenance/unexpected costs and I'm pushing 120K on a 2017 with routine maintenance. Super reliable vehicle. My experience with extended warranties has been terrible with Land Rover products (LR3 and LR4). To reiterate @gmfain 's point above, they don't pay enough or won't cover it at all. Find a competent independent mechanic, don't take the vehicle to the dealership unless absolutely necessary. I've found ownership to be less expensive than my previous F150 XLT and Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi.
