Gas or TD6

Gas or TD6
All - I'm new to the Land Rover forum and community. My wife and I are looking at 2017 Disco5 to be her daily driver. I feel that I have done tons of research and have found a vehicle that checks all of the boxes (cost, mileage, trim, etc.). My question is concerning the research I've done on the TD6 models. Most of the information I can find deals with DEF costs, DEF alerts and regrets on getting the TD6 over the gas. I thought I would come to the "experts" and get the opinions of any of the TD6 owners here on how their experience has been. Thanking you in advance.

I love mine. Have had no issues with DEF or alerts. DEF is cheap and easy to refill yourself.
Only thing I did was disable the auto stop/start as that's a bad idea on diesels. Otherwise, I enjoy great mileage. I will say that my main reason for getting it was because I take several multi-hour trips a year in it hauling kids to college and back. If it were for my wife, who does mostly around town, stop and go, short trip type of driving, I'm not sure I would have chosen that for her.

i have a MY17 and the TD6 is great. echoing 1979rover, DEF is not an issue, just sounds like the diesel haters mouthing off.
speaking of diesel, not sure you know but who knows if there ever will be another diesel available here for the D5. They've stopped offering the TD6 for Discovery's with MY21 and that (Ford?) engine is due to be discontinued. There are new "Ingenium" MHEV diesels that JLR has developed, but for some reason, has refused so far to bring/certify them stateside.

I agree with eelpout and 1997rover. If you can make 1 or two longer trips it keeps the DEF/regen system in good shape it will be fine.
When your in a tight spot offroad and you feel that low end torque grunting and pulling you out.....you'll be saying I'm glad I got the diesel. It is a Ford diesel engine. ran in european market several years, Oil and filters are cheap.
Good luck!

We've put 22,000KM on our 19 TD SE in 15 months of ownership, no issues with the diesel part, however it's been at the shop at least 4 weeks for other items. We've done DEF once ourselves no issue, the dealer does it for us complimentary. I always let engine come up to midpoint temp even if it means idling. Occasionally drive snot out of it.
For us the range per tank is the big thing. We get about 850KM per tank in mixed driving. But when you get on the highway: directly from the LR app that top row is 359KM @ 114KM/H using 8.6L/100M = 231 miles at 70.8MPH / 27MPG over the coast mountain range here in PNW. Furthest we've gotten is 930KM on one tank (and, erm, not going slow).
Duration (HH:MM) Distance(km) Efficiency(N/A) Average speed(N/A)
3:12 359 8.6 114
3:21 337.9 7.8 102
2:09 240.8 7.5 114

yeah, it's a bit criminal they no longer are offering a diesel for the D5 (looks that way for 2022's now too). I'm letting my dealer know I'm not happy about this. it feels a bit like they are just going to idle on the engines they have while waiting for electric offerings to come in a few years.
