Life of brake pads
Hello friends,
I have a 2017 D5 with 15k miles and I have a couple questions on brake pad replacement.
I'm out of warranty, of course, and I do have access to a good independent.
1) About how long do the front and rear pads last before I should start keeping an eye on them?
2) If the rotors look good, is it really necessary to replace them?
Thank you!

My rule of thumb with my old LR3 was rotors and pads, then pads only after 20k, then repeat.
My D5 has not needed any yet, but here is my choice.

$416 shipped to my address
Used these on my LR3 and RR HSE, never any issues

Depends massively on your driving style and where you drive. Start top urban vs highway very different. Our rears were done last autumn after 4+ years and 65,000 miles. Warning just came in for the fronts at 73,000 miles
I never got more than 30-40k on the old heavy LR4
Note they have a warning indicator to warn then they are low. Although it's quite generous and in my experience you have quite a bit more before you need to change them
I usually do pads each time and rotors every 2nd time. But at 73k miles I'm going to do pads and rotors anyway.

My 2017 had the warning come on. We have about 65k miles and the rear pads were gone.
Easy DIY to replace after figuring out how to unplug the rear parking brake.
The front pads and rotors were already changed by the dealer before we purchased it at 45k miles and still look great. Plenty of life left. We drive hills and mountain roads daily for commute so we go through brakes often.
Should have at least 40-50k miles on the new set of pads.

Rotors are typical upsell by shops and for me they are lifetime item as few measurements on previous cars would give them over 400k miles life.
They develop lips at some mileage, but measuring to still have 60% of useful thickness, I did grind the lips and keep going.
Land Rover is new brand to me, but for Mercedes, I was buying Akebono pads whenever I could. Had them on E-class sedan and after putting 150,000 miles on them, still had over 60% of pads left.

For scum reason, our front rotors were toast at only 42K along with the pads and we are NOT hard on brakes. That warped rotors feeling?
These PowerStop rotors and pads have had the [now and then] squeal-ies starting about 12K on them. They do work well otherwise and seem to be wearing OK. Still looking for a better quieter choice next time.
