Default Side steps VS rock rails?

Hello everyone,

I’m thinking of making some changes to my ‘18 HSE Lux to make it more off-road ready (or at least to ease my mind about off-roading). Mine came with factory side steps, which seem very sturdy and seem like they would offer a good amount of protection to the body. Can anyone weigh in on how these would compare to having “rock sliders” like proud rhino sells? I much prefer the look of the side steps, so if it gets me most of the way to the protection the rock sliders offer that would definitely be the right choice.

Thanks!!

Rock sliders will provide much better protection.

Side steps provide minimal/zero protection. They'll bend and can bend up to prevent the door from opening.

Get rock sliders and then no-slip tape to put on the tree bars. Only two companies I know of making rock sliders is Lucky 8 and Wild Bear 4x4. Lucky 8 has more underside protection, but 4x the cost of wild bear.

Also Ralf Sarek at Sarek autoworks in Virginia might be doing L663 rock sliders. I suspect he can make a set for a Discovery as well considering how similar they are underneath.

Doesn't look like Wild Bear ships to the US

I think they were supposed to sell through Roversnorth. Once upon a time I did find it on RNs website but not anymore. Probably worth a call to see how badly they want to try and upsell you on it.

That is my main problem with RN. They do it with Exmoor trim. Like, 2x the price as importing it yourself via Bearmach or whomever.
