AT&T Dropping 3G for 2017 First Edition Discovery
I would think it is possible in theory, but there must be more work than it appears or they would be leading the pack with a solution.
I called JLR and was told that a solution is in the works but no information is available, and vehicle owners will be contacted soon.

My InControl subscription expires soon and it said something about no refunds after a certain number of days. I called Land Rover's Customer Relationship Center at 1-800-637-6837 to ask if this would apply after 3G goes away.
The LR person said that the Telematics module 'connects with LR servers directly' and would not be affected by the 3G issue. He also said that swapping the SIM in the armrest for a 5G SIM would sort out the Nav screen etc. I questioned him for some time on this, but he seemed certain that what he said was the case.
The information on the Telematics module seems highly suspect. What system could the Telematics system use other than a 3G cell tower communication? I am not sure that a SIM card swap would fix the InControl screen. Anyone know the 'upgradability' of a SIM card system?
If someone would like to volunteer to call the number above, we would have two data points at least.

Ok, I presume that you DO have a physical SIM card in it. Here is where it gets a bit hairy .... IF this was an early model (manufactured in 2016) you may only have a 3G modem. Doubt it, but possible. If that is the case, then you need to see if you can upgrade it to a 4G modem. It will be a pain, and expensive - if possible at all.
Yeah, but the connectivity happens over the air, and that is done through your modem. Depending on the modem, if it is 3G only, then the "Direct" connectivity will cease once 3G is down.
All the telematics will be dead at that point.
IF you are on 4G already, they you are good.
So, now....let me ask you this: when you go to ATT Connected Car website, and try to see if you can buy a new subscription, does it let you buy one ? Or does it say that your VIN is not compatible ?

Just an idea, but I don't know if it would work:
Could we take the 5G sim card out of an AT&T phone and put it in the D5 and see if it connects and downloads some data.
Then, we still wouldn't know if it downloaded at 3G or 5G but maybe by logging into the AT&T account you could see whether it was by 3G or 5G.
Could also try this with a Verizon sim card.

Yes, it will work into another phone, but not a "modem" of a car.
You can absolutely try (I did in the past with the Velar ) and it did not work.
I had to take my 2017 Discovery in for service this week and asked the service managers about this. Basically, there's no fix available to switch to any newer network because the TCU in the 2017 is only capable of 2G/3G. BUT, sounds like the remote functions will get switched to an available 2G network to allow them to still work.
The SIM card will no longer work because...no 3G. anything you were using 3G for, it'll work when connecting the Discovery to wi-fi, this also includes SOTA updates.

e-calls, stolen vehicle, remote functions (locks, remote start, etc) apparently operate across 3G, they will be moved to operate on an available 2G network. (T-mobile, for example, still has their 2G GSM network available...until they eventually sunset it too)
