I did not know that. I will push my dealer to see if I can get a better answer.

I check with my dealership and they told me the following: "So I found out the TCU in the vehicle will not support 4g or higher and there is nothing we can do here unfortunately to change that

They had a shop foreman conference call earlier this week about it specifically "

Pretty disappointing, especially for a 2020!!!
Definitely test it, as the common understanding was that impacted cars were up to MY17. 2020s should already be on the 4G equipment. If newer than MY17 cars are impacted, then they might have to figure something out because the whole enabling remote functions via 2G is not going to last long (December is when TMO is supposed to turn that network off).

On a separate note, I have been traveling but have been checking the remote app this week and no issues connecting with the car (which is back at home). So seems that as stated they have transitioned to the 2G network for the remote functions. I also cancelled my AT&T plan and added a hotspot to my TMO account to have as dedicated connection in replacement of the removable SIM (monthly cost of the TMO hotspot line with 2GB is the same as what I was paying AT&T for 1GB, woohoo!!). Once the hotspot arrives and I set it up will report back on how it works.

My 2017 D5 is at the dealer for a couple things before the CPO warranty expires.
I can view it's status, and journey with the app on my phone today.
I thought 3G ended 2 days ago.
Maybe it's using the wifi at the shop.

The remote app functionality (i.e. status, lock/unlock, remote start, etc.) were migrated to Tmobile’s 2G network, hence why they are and will continue working (until that network is sunset).

Y'all know that this can be solved very easily by JLR (or any other manufacturer if they want)?
- scenario 1 : use a in car Femto cell which could be fed by your own phone (hotspot) - needs a tiny bit of tinkering, but real easy to do. Everything in the vehicle stays in place as is today.
- scenario 2: update the module, with a new LTE module - the most elegant solution.

My 2 cents.

The key sentence being “if they want”. Unfortunately there seems to be very little interest from JLR to address this.

Default Latest Update

Just wanted to post one more update now that I received and setup the dedicated T-Mobile hotspot on our 2017 D5:
  • Remote functions: As mentioned earlier in this thread, JLR moved connectivity for the remote functions to a 2G network in order for those to still be available. This was done behind the scenes, which means that if you have an active InControl subscription those functions will still work regardless of the 3G connectivity going away. I tested this earlier this week and everything I could test works as it should, namely vehicle status (location, fuel range, odometer, etc.), remote lock/unlock, remote climate and remote folding/unfolding of the second and third rows via the remote app. Assume that SOS emergency call and stolen vehicle locator also work (for obvious reasons I did not test...). While testing I had a couple network delays, but that happened in the past as well.
  • Removable SIM enabled functions: after cancelling my AT&T Connected Car service and removing the SIM I proceeded to install my new TMO dedicated hotspot (Franklin D9) setup. I connected the car via the wifi connectivity to the hotspot, which was simple and straightforward (unlike what I experienced when trying this with my phone hotspot). Once connected I tested navigation live search, real-time traffic info, fuel prices, parking information and sharing ETA and all worked fine. Web browser also worked perfectly (and much faster than in the past), so in terms of connected functionality we are where we were before 2/22. The hotspot also addressed the issue I had when trying to connect via my phone's hotspot (i.e. needing human intervention every time I started the car to connect it). For this I located the dedicated hotspot in the center console storage and connected it for power to the power port in that compartment (that way I do not need to think about it running out of battery); when I turn the car on, the power port energizes and "wakes up" the hotspot (it will turn off after several minutes of inactivity), the car then connects to it automatically (with the delay between the car starting and it connecting to the hotspot being similar to the delay we typically experienced with the removable SIM).
So all in all this setup has addressed the issue at the same monthly cost we were paying before. Still, not thrilled that we never heard anything from JLR (to date I haven't even received a communication informing me of what was going to happen, though apparently others have, so might be just me) and that we had to figure out a solution by ourselves, but happy to keep all the functionality, while we are able to order a new D5 (which we were trying to do anyway). As it turns out new orders for D5s are even more difficult to get these days than the Defender....

@Juancl - Thank you for the updates. Is good that they have done this switch to a 2G network (TMO) for the time being. However, that too will be shut down at the end of December 2022. Is the only one left in the US.
Even though now is still early, in 4-5 years, the current LTE (4G) will be scarce and less reliable, and all the carriers are moving the spectrum to 5G. What does that mean ? spotty coverage for our new vehicles (now) that only have 4G - and not 4G-5G modems. Another glaring idiocy of JLR.
But, I guess this is too early to talk about now.
