Interesting.

So now yet another party will have access to all our driving data since their system connects through OBD II

What a mess.

  • Started by turning off mobile data in InControl.
  • Using my phone's personal hotspot (iPhone 11 on T-Mobile) I followed the steps to get the car to connect to it. That step in itself took a couple tries as the wifi search function from InControl seems spotty. Finally got it to connect and once connected all of the functions that use data from the removable SIM seem to be working (navigation search function, destination information, navigation traffic, web browser). So on the positive side, once connected it does work.
  • The biggest issue I have with it, is that it is not as seamless as get in the car, turn it on and start driving with no user intervention (as the SIM works today). Reconnecting to the wifi seems hit or miss, sometimes it would reconnect automatically after starting the car (as long as the iPhone's personal hotspot is enabled), sometimes it would not, which then meant having to toy around with the phone or the wifi connectivity screen on InControl (it doesn't help that iPhone's personal hotspot itself is a bit clunky). All in all the phone hotspot alternative is not going to cut it for me.
  • Also, the car would have to connect to different phone hotspots depending on who takes the car (my wife or I), and though I haven't tested that scenario yet, I feel it's going to create even less reliability.
Given this I am now considering adding a T-mobile hotspot to the family account and just keep it in the car. Has anybody tested that? Would hope that at least on the hotspot side it would be more consistent and reliable than iPhone's hotspot functionality.

I'm guessing JLR are going to push an update - soon, right? - that will change the network connection order. My guess is it wants to default to the built in modem vs anything else. The other puzzle piece is phone personal hotspots are never as reliable as dedicated hot spots; you'll see significantly more reliability that way. The Mojio system VAG is going with I posted about earlier provides just that. I can't speak to the T Mobile hot spot but when we used to road trip teams we always used a dedicated hot spot.

@Juancl - Have you tried to see if the telematics work ? e.g. SOS call, locate your vehicle on in control app, or lock / unlock, engine start ?

I did not as my understanding is those do not communicate via the removable SIM. I will try them with the mobile data off and w/o wifi to confirm that.

Today's the day AT&T shuts down their 3G. In an article in USA Today, they report the following for Land Rovers: https://www.usatoday.com/story/money...001/?gnt-cfr=1
A spokesperson for the two British labels told *** Media that they're moving to T-Mobile's 2G network to preserve their safety and convenience features and customers will be notified this month.

Additionally, AT&T has finally updated their messaging in my wifi account with them:

The fact that LR used twenty something year old 3G in 2017 vehicles is just plain absurd.

So I have been dealing with this issue with another vehicle of mine and was not really paying attention to the Disco. I was looking at my AT&T account yesterday and noticed the message posted above. I have not tested the wifi but I'm guessing it does not work anymore. I just checked the app and I'm still getting updated information. Oh and as an FYI, mine is a 2020 model. I check with my dealership and they told me the following: "So I found out the TCU in the vehicle will not support 4g or higher and there is nothing we can do here unfortunately to change that

They had a shop foreman conference call earlier this week about it specifically "

Pretty disappointing, especially for a 2020!!!

Wait, I thought 2020 Models were already on 4G or had an OTA update to move them to 4G and the TCU would support it. 2017s were supposed to be the last year that used 3G only.
