Default Trailer Brake Controller Installation

I recently joined the club with my first LR, a 2020 Disco V. I have a small camper that I need to tow (3,500 lbs.) and it has electric brakes. After researching here and my dealer, I realized that there is not much guidance on the connection requirements for a trailer brake controller, so I thought I would share what I found. The connector that is under my dash right by the brake pedal strut Is for a brake controller, and it is the same plug for a TBC in a 2002-2020 Ford Explorer. The photo below shows the plug under the dash. A 7mm socket is all that is needed to remove the 3 panel screws to access the area to find the plug. Since I have a Tekonsha controller, adapter part #3035-P should work. For a Curt controller, part #51322 or #51323 will work. I checked the 7 pin connector at the hitch and the 12v terminal showed power, so the fuse is already installed to charge a trailer battery. Hope this helps, and feel free to post your questions.

Thank you for sharing (even though I don't even have a trailer yet).

Update: My adapter came today and I was able to install my Tekonsha brake controller without any issues. Probably the easiest installation I’ve done so far.

Default Wireless Brake Controller?

Any reason why you went with a hard-wired brake controller vs a wireless one? I just bought my 2018 Discovery td6 and am trying to use my wireless brake controller with it to tow my teardrop trailer. The controller worked with my previous car (Audi) and I have paired it with a few others (Ford), but can't get it to pair with my Land Rover. According to Tekonsha, it should work. Did you research wireless ones and come across any reason they shouldn't work? Thanks!

I already had this wired controller in a previous vehicle, so I wanted to use it. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the wireless options but I hear they can work quite well. Good luck!

Hi Ryan,

I've been using the Tekonsha Prodigy wireless brake controller for 5 years on my 2017. When I bought the vehicle new, no one was aware of the plug under the dash, including the dealer! Now that I have come across the simple wired option, I am going to switch over. Not that the wireless is bad but I do experience intermittent connection loss between the remote and the controller.

I was also surprised at how the Dealership had no idea this existed. Here is my post from early 2021:
