1999 D2 doesnt always start
My D2 starts beautifully but then at times it cranks like crazy but doesn't start. An hour later it could start but then at times I continue to have it crank and not start. One time (only one time) while HWY driving, it shut down. I pulled over and it started and I drove it home.
Welcome. We have downloads available for free of the shop manuals. Crank Position Sensor can do this, classic symptoms are opens when hot (like stopping at the store for a few minutes). Cools off and internal connection makes back. Can test if won't start - pour cold water on it.
Now, to make sure you do your home work either use our search button or download the manual, the intro pages are really not the best place for tech issues. And there are other things related to temperature and age that your D2 needs attention to, like a better thermostat, a rebuilt front drive shaft (old one breaks and spears a hole in the tranny), etc.

Thank You Savannah Buzz, interesting that you brought up thermostat. Related or not, I have another problem...First, I have a lot of trust in my LR mechanic. He has a shop and nothing but Rovers and high end European vehicles waiting in line to be seen. That said, he put in a new head gasket and radiator because of overheating problems. BUT, a gurgling can be heard in the passenger compartment. I am leaking antifreeze on compression. Splattering all over the engine. Replaced the holding tank but still no change. I love my D2 but fed up now. Any thoughts??
if you want to check your ckps you can do it with an obdii scanner.
when the truck wont start plug it in and see if you have any rpm while cranking, no rpm = bad cps.
you my also want to borrow a cooling system pressure tester to pin point your leak
