my name is Jon. I'm a 49 year old dad of 7 and gramps of 5 so far.

My wife and I like to explore back roads and trails, and while we have a capable rig, it is a bit overkill for what we want to do with it. We love to explore colorado, mild obstacles are ok as long as there is something to see once we are there, however driving an obstacle just to see if we do not break is not our cup o tea.

Looking at the 96 -2003 model range and would like to know what to look for --issues, common problems, service needed and so forth.

Which models use solid axles? are parts available? as you can see I am not above wrenching and learning, unless it is real scary I think we can handle repairs.

In the Discovery 1 section of the forum is a technical listing at the top of the list of posts. Inside you will find many things, including "what to look for when buying a Discovery", comparison between D1 and D2, and typical high miles, new2u ownership things to check, etc.

In link below in my signature you will find free download of the set of factory service manuals for most models, it is called the RAVE.

Parts are readily available, salvage yards; dismantlers (on this forum and some in my signature), internet (Rovers North, British Parts Utah, Atlantic British, and more), generic auto parts stores, and the seldom popular "stealership".

D1s have solid axles, and a lot less electronic fru-fru that more recent models. It is a basic solid truck. Sounds like you might want the option for jump seat seating in the rear.

If you like craigslist, there is a site called www.statewidelist.com, which will search all of craigslist for your state, with parameters, and sort the output by city. Here's an example, "Rover", under $10K, by owner, and don't buy the first one you see:
