Default HEAD GASKET? HELP!!!

NEW MEMBER AND LOVE THE SITE!

I recently purchased my second Discovery II. The current disco is a 2000 with 67K miles in pretty good shape. While driving home a few weeks ago the disco shut off when I was pulling into my driveway. I looked at the dash and noticed the temp. was maxed on the motor(wish I noticed this prior). No coolant was under the car, so as my heart started to race in fear of a head gasket I pulled the dip stick. Results were milky oil and the oil level being very high due to the increase in fluids. I pulled the motor apart only to find head gaskets that look like new as well as the intake gasket! I had two shops check them out for other opinions and they said it they look fine/new.

Heads are being checked now by a local machine shop. I don't know what else to do, and in fear of the block being cracked but I can't see anything. Any Ideas or suggestions?

Ryan

Read the info at this link.....http://www.eurotekapg.com/ptrain.html

Depending on how long the gage was pegged, you may have other issues. At a minimum you have to check that none of the steel liners have dropped below the deck surface of the aluminum block. If this is the case, there is no use in skim cutting the heads and re-fitting them. You will lose a head gasket again. In addition, the reason for the overheating has to be determined. Causes are radiator blockage, water pump failure, etc.

If the engine block saw major overheating and has internal water jacket cracks it is almost impossible to find all of them. You are then looking at replacing the block.

Let us know what you find out.

Default RE: HEAD GASKET? UPDATE!!! NEW MOTOR

So after reading and talking with LR motor heads... I think I will cut my losses and get a used motor. I have located a used motor on good old EBAY! Should be here in one week. Question is now do I replace the head gaskets, intake, and valve cover gaskets before I drop the new motor in? Also should I have a valve job done too? Not sure if I should bother taking this motor apart. Anyone have any thoughts??????

Also any suggestions where I should buy a gasket kit from ???

Default RE: HEAD GASKET? UPDATE!!! NEW MOTOR

Thats kind of a hard question to answer without knowing the mileage and history on the replacement motor. Look for evidence of oil and/or coolant seepage around the bottom edge of both cylinder heads (behind the exhaust manifolds). Check for leaks around the timing case cover. Check that the oil pressure sending unit is not leaking (on the timing cover). Problem is--- whoever you bought the motor from could have steam cleaned it before shipping, so you may or may not be able to tell if there is a potential problem.

Whenever the Shop next door buys a used motor they always pull the heads and inspect it, fit new gaskets, seals, etc.

I have a great price on the entire Head Gasket Kit that includes the 20 head bolts that are needed. On these engines the head bolts are a "one time use" item, and then you toss them. They are stretch bolts that are "indexed" according to a easy to follow procedure (as opposed to conventional bolts that are just torqued to a certain value). The kit is $187.50

Have the heads checked for flatness. If it was me, and I didn't know for sure how many miles were on the motor, I'd go ahead and have a valve job done. Obviously, all of this is much easier to do with the engine out, so take your time and do it right.
