Default Hello All!

My name is Kristin and I am here for my boyfriend who is in the market for a "new" used vehicle. He is particularly interested in the Land Rover Discovery and has requested that I try to get some more information in regards to them.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would take a moment to answer the following questions. Or at least give your opinions based on your experiences.

When answering these questions please bear in mind that he will be it using for mostly on-road trips with the occasional trip to California washes and trips into the mountains. 4-wheeling usage would be limited however when taking it out to use in 4 wheel drive he has plenty of experience from previous vehicles. (for example: 4 Runner, Passport, F250 *modified*)

1. How reliable is the Land Rover Discovery?
2. Does it require a lot of maintenance and upkeep?
3. What would you guess would be the average annual cost of upkeep?

Basically he is looking for a reliable vehicle that won't cost an arm and a leg to maintain and will last him for approx another 10 years.

Thanks for all of your help!

1. They are very reliable IF you maintain them.
2. A little more than average repair and maintenance.
3. Depends on what you get and where you have it serviced. All of my friends with Rovers go to the dealerships and it is expensive, but I am really suprised most of them can pump their own gas. I have found mine to be easy to work on, and not much more than your average foreign car. I have a 780 Volvo and a 325 BMW. This is cheaper than those 2 so far. NOTE : a friend did not maintain his Disco, and he just paid $4000 to have the dealer do the top half of his engine.

Just my opinion. I have only had mine for 2 years, but I love it, and would surely get another.

Thanks for the info... this is proving to be very helpful!

Oh and by the way... my boyfriend and I were laughing last night as I'm a huge jeep fanatic and I see how some of you have been converted from jeep fans to LR fans. Very VERY cool.

Would anybody else like to express their opinion?

We'd thoroughly enjoy it!

Hi, Kristin --

My husband and I have a 2001 Land Rover Disco Series 2 SD. We've put over 200,000 miles on it since it rolled new off the lot.
It gets a lot of highway driving, and often hauls a couple hundred pounds of cargo in the back. We seldom use the 4WD, but have used it occasionally to get unstuck. Surprisingly, we've had few major problems. Most of the big ticket items that broke happened early when the car was under warranty. The radiator was replaced twice -- once under warranty and once on our nickel. Brakes seem to need work more often than one would expect. Looking over our repair receipts I see we've averaged about $3000 a year on maintenance, including routine scheduled maintenance, tires, and the occasional hose/belt/wire/gasket that gives up when you don't expect it. Oh, yeah -- if the book says use premium fuel, be sure to use premium fuel. It really makes a difference in maintenance and mileage.

I'm new as a poster on this site, but have lurked for a long time. The technical help discussion board is high-quality. If you browse through that board you'll get a sense for some of the odd problems some folks have had the misfortune to experience. My personal experience with the Disco has been quite happy, though.

Good luck!
