Default Hello! new member in Colorado here! Opinions on my purchase....

I've wanted a Disco II forever and finally bought one. I'd like to hear everyones opinion on what I bought, good or bad...I have thick skin....and a hard head.

I bought a 1999 Disco II with 193,000 on it for $2000. I bought it from the original owner who bought it with 30 miles on it from the dealer. I pulled this guys service records from the dealer, they took it in for everything, even to get the wipers changed.

Everything looks good on it except for a power steering leak from the resivoir hose (fixed now), a very light diff fluid seep, and a little rust on the roof, no oil leaks, plugs are good, no 3 amigos. It did throw a PO446 service engine too, but I replaced the gas cap, purge valve (stuck open) and some other cracked hoses and have not seen it in about 200 miles or so.

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks,

Chris

Sounds good. Now check front drive shaft to see if no grease fittings on U joints on double section, if not it can split and beat hole in tranny. Temp gauge is not accurate. Get a scanner to see real temps. There is a 180F alternate stat available.

Sounds like you made a good choice! Even when the PO has been diligent with servicing with that many miles things can pop up unexpectedly! Good luck with it, find a way to read the actual coolant temps and check the prop shafts as mentioned in the last post!

This is a copy from another post I made about a weird noise, which I think is related to below or also the lug nut caps are so loose, I would think they were about to fall off if I hadn't already read how hard they are to remove.

So there is one grease fitting on the engine end of the front drive shaft and another on the joint to the front differential.

There are no grease fittings on the transfer case side u joint where the drive shaft connects. Mine looks exactly like the pic below....minus the twisting. No grease fittings on the end with the circle, but it does have the two with the arrows. The joints do not look worn or rusted, but I'm assuming that will end up being a big problem. Yes, I'm confirming that's the ujoint everyone speaks of replacing, I've done a lot of engine work but not a lot of drive work at all so I may be using the wrong terminology.

Anyone have a link to buy the greasable u joints...or somewhere here in Denver to pick them up.

Thanks.

I was just in Colorado for vacation, love that place.

I've heard plenty of guys buy them from Napa. Here's a link if you don't want to google it:

JC's Rovers in Denver did mine There is a driveline shop nearby if you want to install it yourself.I think it's JC's British and 4X4 They did good work for me. Disco Mike probably knows several places . I just knew this one, We were on a road trip when I found out about the shaft splitting and killing the tranny. Glad I made it there it was about to go. Don't chance it if it needs to be replaced.

Hello Chris, the place I used to work has a lot of Land Rover parts you can see their web site at autoparts-sales.com (I created the site lol). Looking to meet some local Land Rover owners and interested in hearing about any clubs.
