Land Rover virgin here. About myself - I'm fairly accomplished shadetree mechanic and licensed aircraft technician who has been wrenching on things for over 30 years. This makes my first ever British vehicle, unless I am forgetting one - I've had at least a hundred cars in my life.
What did I buy? a '95 Discovery, 30k on a rebuilt engine, has a rebuilt 5 speed manual transmission, new tires all around, terrafirma lift kit, tom woods driveshafts, decent body and a very nice full size cargo rack, 2 front seats out of a Discovery 2. The interior is quite dirty and the clear coat is peeling on the hood, but the engine purrs like a kitten.
Why did I buy it? I'm still asking myself this question, but in all actuality I was thinking of buying a 4wd SUV anyway to take on the beach in North Carolina and was leaning toward a Jeep Cherokee. The opportunity presented itself to purchase this one but I had to act fast since the owner was only asking $500. After looking at it, hearing it run (which it actually had to be jumped after sitting idle for 4 months), it sounds great - very healthy engine.
I've always been a little hesitant to buy these, but I was looking for something like it and the price was right. I'm hoping it will be good to me!

welcome.
'95 5-speed is my favorite Disco.
A few of pointers.
Relocate the STC1856 ignition amplifier module. They are mounted to the side of the distributor and get hot there, resulting in poor or no running. You can buy a relocation kit, or you can make your own.
Make sure you have a 180 degree thermostat. Most autoparts stores list a 195 for the disco but that is way too hot. Here's a good one https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...27/#post332647
Use Redline MTF in the gearbox. The manual says ATF but a TSB was issued a long time ago that MTF should be used. Your gearbox will like you.
Normal 90W or 85W140 in the transfer case and axles.
For one that old I'd get the radiator flushed (or rodded if needed) to make sure it's up to par.
For oil filters I use Wix 51515 or Baldwin B2, two of the best on the market. Rotella T oil is a good choice due to flat tappets.
Make sure all your u-joints can be lubed correctly. This post is about rebuilding but includes correct lubrication https://landroverforums.com/forum/ge...02/#post164811
Pull all the hubs and at minimum repack the hub bearings. This routine maintenance is often overlooked. Use RTC3511 seals installed like this https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...62/#post273933
Bearings, if you need them, are Timken SET37, SKF BR37, *** KIT38 or National A-37, two per hub.
FWIW, I'd hate to see what sounds like a nice vehicle driven in the salt, but it is yours so...![Smile](https://landroverforums.com/forum/images/smilies/H5uKDcM.png)
Sounds like you got a fantastic deal! I'm jealous.
