Default If you could to do it all over again....

Hello, just bought my first Land Rover - 2000 Discovery II with 145k miles. I've been away from chat forums for awhile now (since i sold my '92 camaro), but am looking forward to getting back into it with my new Disco project.

Anyway, knowing what you know now, what would you do differently with your rig if you could start all over?

1. Inspect front drive shaft, if all joints don't have grease fittings rebuild or replace, before it splits and takes out the tranny.

2. Buy Ultra Gauge or a scanner so you can see real coolant temp. Replace stat with 180F model. Buy a new radiator.

3. Replace crank shaft position sensor as precaution.

4. Install new battery in first week.

5. If no key fob buy one and have it synced. Unplug hood alarm switch.

6. Download the RAVE set of manuals.

7. Start on the high miles service list.

Thanks for the tips.

1. The front driveshaft definitely is missing a grease nipple at the bottom (has a plug) and there is some grease stain on the catalyic converter. I'll be under the car changing the trans fluid and I plan on putting a fitting in the driveshaft to at least get some more grease in it. Are there any signs of trouble that I can look for? Or do they just break at the least opportune time?

2. Got a scangaugeii, works well. My temp reading seems to be 200 - 208 deg F. I like the idea of a lower temp thermostat. I'll search around for some posts on this, probably will do a coolant flush while I'm at it.

4. Done

5. What would be the purpose for a key fob?

6. Done

7. Getting started this weekend - changing transmission filter and flushing fluid, going with Amsoil, draining transfer and differential fluid, replacing with Amsoil.

Shafts dry out the sealed joints, maybe chirp just a little, then fly apart at speed and poke big hole in tranny case. Big enough for dealer to pull $7,000 thru. Front propshaft rebuild article in tech section.

You'll want a key fob if you ever have problems with alarm immobilization of the truck.

The points I'm making are that there are lots of little gremlins that get you if instead you first decided the number one task was a new $1500 roof rack and six Hellas.

These posts are very useful because my first thought was to buy the roof rack and lights. i have a 03 disco 2 with 140k. the man i bought it from said that he did a big service at 102k but im not sure what all he did. motor runs strong but there is a slight smell of antifreeze when i go on long trips. is this some what normal on these discos?
