Default In the market for a 02 Discovery

Hello! What a great board. I'm in the market for a 02 Disco and this is just what I was looking for. My wife and I are expecting our second child in August and we are looking for family type car. Nothing as big as a Tahoe/Explorer but not as family looking as a mini-van. I love the way the Discovery looks and drives but the thing that is keeping me up at night is the upkeep/repair nightmare I've heard about the Discovery.

Anything that can put my mind at ease would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 96 disco. 130k. not many problems. Family car, oh yeah. 4 kids and wife. all over the country and no major problems. Things to be careful about all car, but more specific to rover is that it has been maintained. Get the records. Make sure the maintainence is kept up to date. It saves lots of money. Rover parts and repairs are not cheap. learning to do some of them yourself if you can is a plus. You get to know your vehicle and can be sure it is done right. This is a good place with good people will to help. There is a list posted on parts sources for rovers. It is a good thing to have. Ebay is also a good place to look for accessories and other parts. You gotta love a rover. Welcome to the forum. duboff

duboff,
Thanks for your reply. The one I'm looking at is coming off a lease with all of it's updated records and is still under the 50K warranty. I've been told I can purchase an extended warranty for up to 100,000 miles. Which I plan to do.

LRs have gotten a bit of a bad rap with problems. They used to have more problems than they have now. If you properly maintain them they'll last quite some time. Buy one in confidence as long as you know the regular maintenance was performed.

The Rickster-
Thanks for your input! One question, oil changes? Can you they be done elsewhere or do they have to go to the LR dealership? Is so how much?

I'm not a DIYer but, to my knowledge, you should be able to do them yourself. Just make sure with someone who's more technical than I am. I know the Freelander we had before took a specific LR oil filter and had a gasket or something on the plug which needed to be replaced. If you didn't use the proper filter you'd blow the engine. I don't believe this is the case with the Disco but check with others to be sure.

I believe you can get those special parts for the Freelander to do it yourself anyway.
