Default New 2003 Disco. Suggestions?

Hello all! New member and new to LRs completely. I just bought a 2003 LR Disco primarily for hunting and camping and this will NOT be an every day primary driver. Anyway, I was curious if you all had any suggestions for maintenance that I should begin looking into right away. LRs have a reputation for being on the heavy side of maintenance so I'm a little concerned about what I might hear.

Anyway, the rig has 176K miles. The previous owner has owned it since 36K miles and says he can't recall any major repairs or issues (which I find somewhat troubling). I just put new tires on it (Goodyear Duratracs 255/70R16). It seems to drive very well and be in overall good shape. The check engine light remains on and the previous owner said he took it into the shop and they assured him that it is a glitch and doesn't represent a significant problem.

Again, just primarily need to know about what I should be on the lookout for problem-wise. Is the constant check-engine light a common problem?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I would suggest turn off the check engine light first and then try ECU reset. To turn off the light, you may need a LR code scanner or cable. I had my check engine on last month, finally got it fix with this cable. To reset ECU, check this out: ECU Reset - It's A Miracle Cure !!!!

You should be troubled if there have been that many miles with no major repair. Be prepared to replace headgaskets at some point. Unless they already need them. Look for mysterious loss of coolant. Greasy looking stuff around the heads.
Take it to an autoparts store and get the check engine code scanned. They will do it for free. They won't turn it off , but check back here with the codes that it reads. This could be serious. Read some of the other posts and stickys on here about maintenance.
Never under any circumstance let it overheat. There are many posts about the useless temperature gauge in the dash. When it shows hot, your engine is usually already toast.
Nice sticky by Disco Mike on High mileage service in Disco II section.
Don't panic just don't wait long to find out what codes you have.

Those P1000 codes seem strange, like maybe they came from a scanner that doesn't know how to interpret the manufacturer specific emissions codes. I'd take it by a part store or something and see if you can get a different set of code to come up for the P1000. I know autozone and the like will usually read codes for free.

Check out the "major service" sticky by disco mike. That's a good starting point to get it caught up.
