New D2 owner
I am the proud owner of a 2003 D2. It has about 96000 miles. I had done a little research on the vehicle before buying but despite that (ha ha) I still went ahead and pulled the trigger. Yeah, it's a 2003 but it's out of the death VIN range (although I've read that doesn't mean I'm safe) and one of my first purchases was a locking CDL. I bought replacement fluids for the brakes, power steering, diffs/transfer case, coolant, engine, transmission. I've a headgasket kit that I will install this winter. New Falken 245/75/r16 tires that I am very pleased with. Also bought a new coolant reservoir and 185 thermostat, brass fill plugs for the diffs, replacement dash/climate control/clock light bulbs, upper and lower ball joints, Terrafirma 2" lift kit, fuel purge valve, and O2 sensor.
The brake pads and rotors look fine. The paint is in decent condition. the body has no dents. It has the 2 jump seats in the trunk which is cool but not as cool as the inboard facing seats like in old Land Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers. I don't think it's an SE as it has no decals on the side marker lamps on the front fender and no leather or wood trim.
It does throw 2 codes: Random Misfire and Misfire Cylinder #4. When I have more time, I will have to investigate further. It sounds a little rough at start up but once warmed up, the engine sounds fine. There is a hairline crack in the driver side taillight. The slightly larger tires rub on the mud flap a little. The front bumper is cracked.
I originally planned to put the lift kit on but now I wish I hadn't bought it. Looking back I think I would have spent that money just towards long travel shocks. Even at stock ride height (and without CDL), I find the vehicle to be very capable. I have no intention of turning it into a hardcore off road vehicle but still want it to be able to take it most places without getting stuck. There are a lot of dirt trails where I live (southwest GA).
Looking forward, I plan to concentrate on maintenance. i would like to rebuild the steering system and replace any suspension bushings as needed. I will start replacing seals next year and replace all U joints with greaseable ones as well.
