Default New to Disco

I am a new to me Disco II owner. Bought it yesterday for a couple stacks. I've wanted a Discovery for a long time. However, my office has always been so far from the house, I didn't want to have to sell internal organs to pay for the gas. Now, I live 16 mi from work....dumping debt...so I went from a 2012 Veloster to the cash paid for Disco.
I put 54 miles on it today.
First impressions......
  • Rides like a truck (expected)
  • Will flat out fly....if you don't mind the sucking noise from the gas tank...er, your wallet
  • Wish the seat would move back a few more inches
  • The headliner needs to be removed and painted ASAP (thanks for that idea)
  • I'm glad I am known to be able to fix anything
I have been browsing the site.....what a wealth of knowledge....can't wait to start modding the truck.

1. Welcome

2. The RAVE is the factory shop manual - download links below

3. Front drive shaft if still oem has sealed U joints on one end. They dry out, it snaps, and the shaft tries to smash a hole in the tranny. Rebuild before this happens, info in the tech area. Or re3place with after market.

4. OEM temp gauge will show 50% from about 130 - 240F. To see real temps use OBDII scanner or the $70 Ultra Gauge.

It's a 1999.
Thanks for the tips S.B.
I downloaded the manual this morning and plan to crawl around under it this weekend...I'll be sure to check the u-joints. I'm going to do the high mileage service in the coming weeks.

What do you mean when you say "rides like a truck?" I ask because my stock '98 D1 rides very smooth. (Not so much when I first got it. A change of all the differential oil seemed to remedy that.)

If a 99 you will be cursed at the parts counter forever. Call it a 98 D1 or a 2000 D2.

By "rides like a truck" is to say that it feels solid and has a little bit stiffer suspension than my wifes SUV.....football mom truck.....that is pretty much a car with a SUV body.
It's not rough or uncomfortable, just way different than my little Hyundai.
One thing I failed to mention is the turning radius.....yikes, that is going to take some getting used to. Not very tight at all.
