Hey there,
just recently picked up an '01 Disco 2 SD with 90k miles... having some issues that im going to try to fix myself and could definitely use some help.
I live in Austin and if there is anyone in the area bored and willing to help PM me, otherwise im goin for it solo. so far this site and the people on it have been a big help.

Welcome to the rover family!!! Download a copy of the "rave" its a handbook for your truck!
Also check your front drive shaft if its the factory one it will have a grease fitting on the front universal joint and one on the shaft itself. It needs to be replaced before it fails

I see that often on this forum. Am I to assume it's a frequent problem? The driveshaft, I mean?

If you have a D2, the factory front propshaft will fail, sometimes before 50,000 miles. This part has no grease fittings, and should be rebuilt (tech area) or replaced with one that does. The shaft is also heated by the CATs, so the grease does not last. Failure allows the shaft to swing around wildly with force, and pop a big hole in the transmission, about $7,000 dealer fix.
