New member, key fob replaced on 2017RR Sport
Hi, another new member driving a 2017 RR Sport HSE Td6.
I stupidly managed to lose a key the other day and got it replaced yesterday and thought I'd share... The local dealer (Houston TX) wanted $389 for the fob and $200 to program it, so with tax over $600 - ouch! Looking online the fobs are available for $30+ on Amazon, e-bay etc. But then the question is would it work and would a dealer program a non-OEM fob. Also, plugging my Vin into LR dealer parts websites seemed to imply I needed a 433MHz transmitter, but other places implied it needed to be 315Mhz. I found a local auto locksmith who would sell an OEM fob for $95 and program it for $200. Asked why his fob was so much cheaper than the dealer he said he'd bought a bunch from someone a while back so could offer them for less. Yesterday I took the car to him and it was reprogrammed with a 315MHz OEM fob in 10 minutes for a total of $295 - less than half the dealer price and while still more than I was hoping, better than it could have been. The only issue is that they won't cut the fail-safe metal key - he said the dealer can do that from the Vin for $75.
