Default worth it??

i've loved land rovers my whole life, gotten my beater auto's, and envied those who cruised by with jaguar classthat could go anywhere they want...

so... now that i can finally afford my LR, all i read on 90% of the reviews is people ripping it in every catagory.
an epiclist of problems that don't seem right considering Land Rover is supposed to produce such quality vehicles.

now... having a decent knowledge of cars... i understand wear & tear and i like to blame improper auto-care and owner stupidity that is the major ingredient in a lot of these problems...

short story long... last two serious LR owner's i spoke with had opposite reviews.
1. 1996 Disco - never had a problem (other thannormal maintenance)
2.2002 Disco - never had nothing but problems... but it's their 3'rd LR (does nothing but complain about them, but has had nothing else)

right now i'm looking at a 95' Disco with about 160 k
the body is immaculate in and out (woman driven... no offence ladies it's a good thing)
some new parts... asking $3,500 (they own 3 rides... just bought a new one)

basically i've always wanted the early yr. Disco and with all the extra chump i'm going to have to spew into it, i can't afford more than $5-6,000...
roughly i have a little over $8,000... think it's enough to purchase the auto and have play money to fix things as needed??

i have an idea what i'm going to do, but it always helps to get some other opinions...
who better to ask than LR owner's...

cheers for your time and effort in advance
