The price is 19k, not 4k. Facebook is helicopter parenting on what prices are allowed to be posted.

I've always wanted a D2. I grew up watching Camel Trophy and G4 challenge footage, and always imagined that one day I'd be roving across the Sahara, or fording the Amazon, in a fully overland equipped LandRover.

Two years ago, I decided to pull the trigger, and buy a white 1997 D1 that was built for serious rock crawling. It was amazing, but turned out to be way, WAY too hardcore for my daily commute needs, so I sold it, and a week later, flew to VA to buy the 2003 D2 you see here.

I had deluded myself into thinking that I would be the ONE guy who bought a D2 that was totally problem free, so instead of doing a PPI, I paid the seller the 9k asking price, and drove back to Boston. Being the fastidious man I am I immediately brought it over to J. White Automotive in Framingham MA and paid 300.00 dollars for a 400 point inspection, and awaited what I thought would be a glowing review.

Big surprise, I was told I had bought an absolute nightmare. Empty coolant reservoir. Leaking oil. System full of KSeal (indicative of a head gasket issue) Exhaust gas in the coolent system. Gas tank that was weeping fuel. Blown shocks and suspension. CEL's that had been cleared right before I bought it. Etc, etc, etc, etc.

The techs at J. White quoted me 50k to rebuild the engine, and fix the avalanche of problems. I blacked out in the waiting room. When I regained consciousness I drove the truck home, got down on my knees and prayed to the god of 4x4's for a sign. Should I set the truck on fire, and move to a convent, or commit myself fully to a rebuild?

Like a fool, I chose the latter.

11 months, and 25 thousand dollars later (I have a full binder of receipts, chronicling the entire build), this truck is absolutely amazing.

Here's what I've done to this 2003, Zambeji Silver Discovery 2.

-Had a center locking Diff installed. I was unaware the 2003 D2 didn't have a center locking diff, so I went ahead and had one installed. Works amazing.

-Added a Saftey Devices roof rack. It's been amazing for overland camping.

-Had a used ARB bumper installed, complete with a new Rough Country 10 thousand pound winch, and braided tow rope. (originally had a steel rope, which will be included)

-Had 6 Auxiliary lights wired on the front and rear, roof rack, and bumper. Again, built this thing with dreams of the Camel Trophy dancing in my head. (All lights professionally wired to 4 carbon fiber "look" toggle switches in front of the dome light)

-Engine pulled, completely rebuilt with a "new" block. In retrospect I should have done a diesel swap, but such is life. Did the head gaskets, spark plugs, wires, waterpump, thermostat, air filter, oil filter, coil pack, timing cover o-rings and gaskets, rear seal, rod bearings, main bearings...all put into a reconditioned 1998 land rover bare engine block.

-Had all the window seals, sunroof seals, windshield seals, cowl, and A pillars replaced after it developed a minor leak, which stained the headliner.

-Had the headliner completely replaced in a beautiful cream color.

-Truck originally had a 4k sound system with an auxiliary sub (see pictures) but I went ahead and has the head unit, and all wires and speakers replaced and upgraded at Sound in Motion in Boston. Also added a back up camera to the touch screen Pioneer unit.

-Bought 5 new all Season Nitto Terra Grapplers, mounted on the original 18 inch rims.

-Had wheel spacers installed for a more aggressive look.

-Had a 600.00 dollar hood sticker applied, by a company called Protective Solutions. I know. 600.00 dollars sounds insane. There's a whole story behind it if you're interested... Land Rovers are story making machines.

-Had a transmission fluid dipstick installed. Weirdly enough, these trucks don't come with one, and i figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to be able to check the levels.

-Complete break overhaul. Had all the rotors, calipers, and hoses upgraded/replaced.

-Replaced the fan blower.

-Replaced gas tank cap.

-Upgraded the windshield wiper arms to the D1's.

-4 wheel alignment.

-Replaced all the suspension ball joints, upper and lower.

-And speaking of suspension. Replaced the factory suspension with a full Terra Firma set, and a 2 inch body lift. Again, Camel Trophy dreams.

-Rebuilt the entire transfer case.

-Replaced Air conditioning compressor.

-Completely replaced exhaust system and added a Flowmaster muffler. Purrs like a Jag.

-Replaced the transmission pan gasket, and went over and refreshed transmission components.

-Replaced Engine oil pan.

-New front stabilizer link.

-Replaced E brake lines.

-New Power steering pump.

-Replaced Axle Shaft seal.

-Welded and fabricated new steel components to remove all rust from the rear of the truck

-Front and rear stabilizer sway links.

-Oh! here's a badass one. The truck actually isn't an SE7, it's and SE6. How is that possible you ask? I had a SINGLE jump seat installed and retrofitted into the back, custom, so I could still carry an extra passenger, without losing the space for the sub, fire extinguisher, and air compressor. Best of both worlds.

-Mounted fire extinguisher, and on board air compressor, so I could inflate and deflate the tires for off-roading. (Did some amazing surfing trips in the rig this summer. Handles deep sand like a champ)

-Installed solar panel and trickle charger, to ensure I'd never have to worry about the battery dying on me after a full day parked on the beach playing music out of the amazing sound system.

-Replaced battery.

-Fuel pump o ring replaced.

-Two usb chargers installed in the dash.

-Installed back up camera.

The majority of the work on the truck was completed by Brian, at BDR Automotive in Holliston. Great shop, can't recommend it enough.

So, why am I considering selling this rig after all the work? Well, simply put, I'm ready for another project, and this truck just isn't being used. I look at it more then I drive it, and with my start up taking off I've only been able to take it camping twice in all of 2020. It's a shame that such a fully built rig is just parked in the driveway 90% of the time, and somebody should be using it for adventures.

I'm really in no rush to sell, but I'm thinking of getting a Range Rover Classic and doing a full restoration, and I have to get rid of one of my 5 cars to make room for a new project....

The body has 153 thousand miles on it, and the rebuilt engine maybe has 7000 miles on it. The interior is PERFECT...and the exterior is a 7/10, with the normal dings, scratches, and wear common with a rig like this. I actually think it looks BETTER with the scuffs...Chicks dig scars, after all.

I'm asking 19k, which is about half of what I put into it. I loved every minute of building and using this truck, so I don't feel like I'm taking any sort of loss...Childhood dreams fulfilled, and all that. I've simply created a monster, and it needs the right Frankenstein that will use it properly.

The Jurassic park stickers, an OBD2 reader, a high-lift, a new set of traction boards for sand and mud, hoses, tubes, fluids, winch cable, hammers, axes, shovles, etc, all bought specifically to be attached to the vehicle for overlanding, are also included

Feel free to ask any and all questions, the entire story of this vehicle is an open book, and I love talking rovers. Thanks for reading this novel of a post, and stay safe out there. Read Less
