Ahhh....when i was 16 (circa '86) my mother worked for 1st Nationwide, which was owned by Ford Motor Company. Our parents bought the new Mustang 5.0 LX for my sister, while I got the crappy Escort GT (wanna be racer) under the AA employee discount.

I hated that car, it would die on my when I hit hard G corners......after returning it 4x to the dealer, my dad eventually got me a reliable new '88 Honda CRX Si....I think I have a picture of it when I mod'ed the max.

EDIT: I found it!!! (circa '89 days before the big earthquake)

Nice. My wife had an '86 CRX when we first met. I loved that little car.

That reminds me, I drove over the bay bridge just hours before the '89 quake. A friend and I were on our way home to Sacramento from L.A. and we made a little detour through SF.

When I lived in the city 1999-2003 we had a few minor rumblers, but nothing like the '89 shaker.

One positive thing about that quake is the removal of the Embarcadero freeway; always thought that was an ugly structure. Seattle is finally starting work to remove the Viaduct, a similarly hideous double-decker freeway. Hopefully the end result will be as nice as the transformation that made the current Embarcadero area so nice.

We lived in Milwaukee for a few months earlier this year, and I was always amazed by the 3-layered network for freeways on the west and sou-west corners of the city. Ugly- absolutely not beautiful, but the function of the system impressed me.

(That isn't to say traffic wouldn't regularly stack up, but still- the network itself was impressive).

I will be living in Grand Rapids MI next. It's a small town, but the highway system was very well planned, even with a river to contend with. Beauty, indeed.

That was one big positive from the quake. The entire area from the bridge to the piers is a fantastic place to walk and enjoy the day. The ferry building has a big open farmers market on the weekend!

I'm 31 and bought the disco 2 because I needed a vehicle with more utility but wanted something different.
