Default sell it or part it out?

I'm looking for suggestions or advice on selling my 97 disco. First of all it has a blown head gasket and the transmission needs work. But only has 150k miles. Interior and exterior not bad. So I'm wondering will I make more money by parting it out including the headache involved or do I sell it out right. Any advice is helpful.

Why can't you replace the head gaskets? What's wrong with the transmission?

Why not repair it?

If you don't need it anymore you could part it out for more money or sell it 'as is' buyer collects to be rid. A personal choice, but if you part out you'll be left with some parts to dispose of for sure.

As I see it you have four options.

1) Scrap it and take whatever the junkyard is willing to give you. Obviously, the easiest solution. All it takes is a phone call.

2) Sell it to someone who may either part it themselves or repair it. Sell it cheap and it will go fast. Expect to get any real money for it and you'll be dealing with tire kickers and people who want to negotiate you to death.

3) Repair the truck. Probably not the most economically sane idea as it will likely take time and a good bit of cash to bring a truck, closing in on 20 years old, needing a transmission and head gaskets, back to life.

4) Part the truck. Sure, you'll make the most money from the truck by doing this but there are a few things to keep in mind. It will consume a large amount of your time, take up a lot of space (figure on a disassembled truck taking up about 2 1/2 times as much space as a whole truck) and will require a significant amount of effort. Parts don't just fall off the truck, cleaned, packed and ready to go out on the next UPS truck. Something to think about.

The parting out option, because it holds the possibility of recovering some of the money you've spent on the truck, is an alluring one. If you have the time, space and willingness to expend the effort, I say go for it. If you are in doubt, choose one of the other three options.

You'll hear a lot of advice about doing the repairs yourself and while that too, may be empowering. Again, if you have doubts about your ability or you face time or space constraints look to one of the last two options.

Like above, you'll hear people tell you that you should sell it to someone who will either repair it or part it so that other trucks may stay alive on the road. This is a wonderfully romantic notion that your truck gave its life so that other may live. Sometimes things turn out that way and it's great. Sometimes the guy you sold the truck to is going to remove the cats, strip off some of the aluminum and scrap it with no one in the Land Rover community benefitting at all.

Which leads me to the first option. It's easy and fast.

In the end it's up to you. How much more are you willing to invest, both financially and physically, in your Rover?
